1 Timothy 1:1-11

1 – INTRODUCTION

2 – Salutation – read v1-2

3 – Paul’s warning against false teachers (Read v3-7)

A – Paul reminded Timothy of HIS responsibility to be sure TRUTH is taught

ACTS 20:32 – And now I commit you to God and to the message of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance among all who are sanctified.

The problem today is that some people in church do 2 things –

1 – don’t accept the authority of the pastor

2 – don’t think that doctrine matters all that much

Col. 2:8 – NLT - Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding

nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.

1 Tim. 6:3 – If anyone teaches other doctrine and does not agree with the sound teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that promotes godliness, he is conceited, understanding nothing, but has a sick interest in disputes and arguments over words.

Titus 1:9 – overseer - holding to the faithful message as taught, so that he will be able to both encourage with sound teaching and to refute those who contradict it.

B – The goal of confrontation (& teaching) - is …………………(v5)

James 3:1 – GNT - My friends, not many of you should become teachers. As you know, we teachers will be judged with greater strictness than others.

4 – Paul reaffirms the value of the LAW (WORD) – REREAD v8-11 NLT For the law was

not intended for people who do what is right. It is for people who are lawless and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful, who consider nothing sacred and defile what is holy, who kill their father or mother or commit other murders. The law is for people who are sexually immoral, or who practice homosexuality, or are slave traders, liars, promise breakers, or who do anything else that contradicts the wholesome teaching that comes from the glorious Good News entrusted to me by our blessed God.

COMMUNICATOR’S COMMENTARY - 3 uses of the law

1 – Bible resembles a locked door to restrain individuals from trespassing

onto the wrong territory

2 – The law resembles a mirror to reveal sin and lead us to Christ

3 – The law serves as a rule and guide to point out the works that please God

5 – DOCTRINE IS IMPORTANT!

2 John 9 – Anyone who does not remain in Christ’s teaching but goes beyond it does not have God. The one who remains in that teaching, this one has both the Father and the Son.

Adrian Rogers – “If it’s new it’s probably not true.”

ORTHODOXY – straight/right teaching

ORTHODONTICS – straight teeth

2 Tim. 4:3 – For the time will come when they will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear something new

APPLICATION & INVITATION

2 Timothy 3:16 – ESV - All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work
