- COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides the student with a comprehensive overview of the New Testament and essential background knowledge for New Testament studies.
- COURSE OBJECTIVES
- Students will read and reflect on approximately 75% of the New Testament gaining familiarity with the essence and impact of the book on the reader.
- Students shall become familiar with the Intertestamental Period and key figures, events, and movements in the New Testament that arose from this period.
- The student will begin to be able to see “the forest for the trees” in seeing the New Testament books in relation to each other in the progression of revelation.
- The student shall become conversant with the historical setting, purpose, theme and basic content of each book of the New Testament.
- The student will develop confidence in and enthusiasm for the study of the New Testament.
- The student will discern the practical relevance of the New Testament in daily life.
- COURSE TEXTBOOKS
REQUIRED: Benware, P.N. 1990. Every Man’s Bible Commentary: Survey of the New Testament (Revised). Chicago: Moody Publishers.
REQUIRED: The Bible. You may bring whatever version you prefer, but course notes are generally keyed to: 1984. The Holy Bible: New International Version. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan.
- COURSE PROCEDURES
Classes will primarily involve media assisted lecture. The examinations shall be derived from the instructor’s lectures. The final exam will be cumulative.
- COURSE REQUIREMENTS
- BIBLE READINGS & READING ASSIGNMENTS. Each week students are required to read two books of the New Testament and answer a one page reflection worksheet for each book read, thus turning in (2) Scripture reading reflections each week. Please follow the Scripture Reading Reflection template when completing this assignment. Answer the Bible reading assignments exclusively based on your reading of the Biblical text and not Benware’s thoughts or the instructor’s notes.
- BENWARE READING ASSIGNMENTS. There will be 10 Benware Reading Assignments in this course. Students are to read the proscribed chapters circling what percentage they read by the readings due date. Students must then answer the questions for that reading assignment.
- EXAM ONE. Exam One is based on the material presented from the instructor’s lectures from the first day of class through the material regarding the Gospels and Acts. All three exams are closed book & closed notes. Students are permitted one hour and forty minutes to take each exam.
- EXAM TWO. Exam Two is based on the material presented from the instructor’s lectures from the first day of class through the material concerning Pauline Epistles.
- FINAL EXAM. The final exam is cumulative and shall be derived from all the instructor’s lectures with special emphasis on the General Epistles and Revelation.
- GRADING

- GRADING SCALE:
A – 90-100% (Excellent Work)
B – 80-89% (Very Good Work)
C – 70-79% (Average Work)
