February 10, 2013 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Is 6:1-2a, 3-8 1 Cor 15:1-11 or 15:3-8,11 Lk 5:1-11 (75)

“Brothers, I handed on to you first of all what I myself received, that Christ died for our sins in accord with the Scriptures; that he was buried in accord with the Scriptures. Rose on the third day, that he was seen by Cephas, then by the Twelve.”… “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch” “…but if you say so, I will lower the nets.”

The faith of Catholics is based on scripture and tradition. We are living the ‘Year of Faith’ recalling the Spirit’s presence in the second Vatican Counsel. The first pillar, the accepted books of the Bible, the second the rich history from the time of Jesus until today. Tradition, as referred to by Paul, is the expression of what really was believed by the first Christians, which Paul himself learned to live after meeting the Lord on the road, and proclaimed during his missionary journeys.

As followers of the Lord Jesus, the scriptures reveal to us God’s saving plan, made flesh in the Person of Jesus and His victory over death. This is the message we accept, live and proclaim today.

We join Jesus as He speaks from a boat on the Sea of Galilee. He turns to Peter, aka Simon or Cephas, and asks him to resume his fishing. Although the fisherman hesitates, he responds to the Lord and could hardly haul in the fish. He now speaks to us. He asks us to reach out to others who are drifting on the sea of life, inviting them to return, to be caught up in His love and the life of the church.

If Peter didn’t listen to the Lord, think of what might have been. Am I ready and willing to listen and lower the net?

Catholic Charities: Feeding the Hungry and Sheltering the Homeless

Did you know one in five New Yorkers can’t afford to buy food, and one in four New York children are not getting enough to eat? Catholic Charities responds by providing more than 6 million meals to the hungry each year. This month, we will join the rest of the Archdiocese of New York in the annual Feeding Our Neighbors campaign to help fight hunger in our community, with a goal of raising one million additional meals for hungry New Yorkers. You can help by donating funds or food or volunteering your time. Learn how at catholiccharieiesny.org

“Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” God asks these questions in today’s first reading from Isaiah. Are we willing to answer with the words of the same reading: “Here I am; send me.” Before saying yes or no, we will likely want to know where and to do what? Pope John Paul I provided a response in a message from August 27th, 1978:

“We are all struggling to raise the world to a condition of greater justice, more stable peace, more sincere cooperation. We invite all of you and encourage you, from the humblest who are the underpinning of nations to heads of state responsible for each nation—we encourage you to build up an efficacious and responsible structure for a new order, one more just and honest.”

As Lent begins this week, may we accept this invitation.

From Cardinal Dolan

Dear friends in the Lord:

Each year, in all the parishes of the Catholic Church across the world, a special collection is taken up to support the charities of our Holy Father. With the funds realized through this collection, known as Peter’s Pence, Pope Benedict XVI is able to assist our most needy brothers and sisters in the Lord in every corner of the globe.

The faithful of the archdiocese have, over the years, been most generous in support of this collection. It has always been for us, not only an exercise in charity, but also a witness to our respect and affection for the Successor of Saint Peter.

With this letter, I write to invite you to be as generous as your means will allow. At the same time, I ask you to keep the Holy Father in your prayers. As in the earliest days of the Church, we followers of the Lord are bound to sustain Peter and to “pray for him without” ceasing.” (Acts 12:5)

With prayerful best wishes, I am,

Faithfully in Christ

Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan

Archbishop of New York

Father Richard Nahman, O.S.A. will be speaking at all the Masses this weekend representing“Food For the Poor”.
