Volunteer of the Year Award

Before this is announced, it is important to say that volunteers are the foundation of the Club. It is a simple fact, without volunteers none of this would be possible and the amazing success of the club, measured in many different ways, is absolutely achieved because of their passion, motivation and selfless efforts. So please, could we give our thanks to all volunteers who give their time to make athletics in York so accessible and so much fun.

The volunteer of the year award was recently introduced to recognise the fantastic contributions that individuals make. We could hand out 50 awards and this would still not be enough as every volunteer deserves our thanks. However, as is the case in these types of evenings, one individual is selected each year to mark their outstanding contribution and to represent the entire volunteer base.

This year’s volunteer of the year has been as difficult as ever to determine, there are so many outstanding candidates. However, in the end a name was decided upon.

This person is not a shrinking violet, is very happy to advise the committee and offer suggestions for improvement and is certainly able to be heard on most training nights.

This person has been involved with the Club as a coach, a committee member, an official and a volunteer for longer than he will want to admit to. But the years have been kind – he still looks as young as he did in 1990, but he always looked old for his age!

This person is passionate about his sport, cares about his athletes, cares about the Club and I believe him to be a fantastic role model for all volunteers. Along with other coaches he is there in all weathers encouraging and berating athletes (in equal measures) but does so with good humour and a great deal of patience. But he also attends every club meeting at the track and is usually to be found leading a team of volunteers at the finish line.

Finally, this guy has led a team of coaches that has seen amazing and unprecedented success in team events in the last year and has developed so many athletes towards the goal of reaching their potential and I am sure there is much more to come. More than that, the group has continued to increase in size and offers training for all levels of athlete – and he is keen on developing athlete’s commitment to train and compete for the club. He has also developed a new idea of organising training groups that will allow all athletes to reach their potential whilst still encouraging and accommodating newer athletes. The group seems to get the mix of hard work and fun exactly right.

Ian Wilcock – take a bow, you are the 2013 volunteer of the Year. Thank you and congratulations.

The final award of the evening goes to a man who is at the heart of the Club.

He has worked tirelessly over many years to deliver community based Athletics that is open to all. In recent years he has been instrumental in delivering a brand new home for athletics in York which is due to open next year. Added to all this he has secured sponsorship from Benenden Healthcare that has enabled the Club to continue delivering high quality training and competition. He has done all this, and more, in his own time and we all owe him and his wife Debbie, who has supported him throughout, a massive thank you.

Ladies and gentlemen, Neil Hunter.
