News page, Language Arts -week of 3/27/17

In case I forgot to say it, welcome back! Did everyone have a great break? I hope so. The remaining weeks of school will fly by even faster than those we’ve already experienced. Stand by for late breaking details. Better get started.

Need to know:

  • Progress reports will be sent home the week of 3/27. I hope all students have continued to monitor both the quality and grades of their individual work.
  • STAAR testing, Tuesday, 3/28 and Wednesday, 3/29, 4th grade writing, 5th grade math and reading

6th grade students will be doingpractice STAAR tests, Math and Reading during this same time.

  • Worth the Wait – thank you to everyone who has already returned the permission form. If your student did not bring this packet/form home, please let either Mrs. Dunn or Mrs. Edwards know and a duplicate copy can be provided.

Spelling and vocabulary

We restarted our regular cycle of vocabulary word maps and spelling sentences on Thursday, 2/23. This two part assignment is due on Thursday, 3/30/17.

Here are the highlights of the assignments.

  1. Find ten library book words (sixth grade appropriate) and five dictionary words that originally came from vocabulary.com. (Total of 15 words.)
  2. Create word maps for a combination of library book and dictionary words. (Each class will need to pay attention to the listed amounts/teacher directions so as to know the correct count and procedure.) Follow all guidelines for creating legible, accurate word map models.
  3. Follow teacher directions to complete the correct amount of sentences.
  4. All new library book words will need to be deposited into each student’s dictionary. Each student should be adding ten new words.

**The teacher directions continue to be the ticket for fully understanding this assignment. If a student cannot find his or her directions page, a copy was posted on-line prior to Spring Break. The only piece that has changed is the addition of the vocabulary.com work. Every other part has stayed the same but with this round; all students should have more prior knowledge to support their learning.

Class Activities

  • Further exploration of persuasive reading and writing – it is time to begin looking various forms of media communication: advertisements, commercials, news articles and more.
  • Released STAAR Reading test – we will spend a couple of class periods completing a practice reading test. Some of our sixth graders have never seen this test and need to see what’s coming in early May. All students will benefit from seeing what a sixth grade test looks like and hopefully everyone will walk away with the knowledge that at this stage,K-most of 6th, a lot of content has been covered. My advice to one and all - no stress, just do your best.
