Unit 2- Matter
Georgia Performance Standards:
SC1 – Students will analyze the nature of matter and its classifications.
b. Identify substances based on chemical and physical properties.
By the end of this unit, I should be able to:
- Classify substances into 4 types of matter.
- Compare and contrast elements and compounds.
- Differentiate between physical and chemical changes.
- Describe physical and chemical properties of various elements.
- Compare and contrast homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures
- Describe at least 2 methods for separating mixtures based on physical properties.
- Design and perform an experiment to successfully separate a mixture a mixture of 4 substances.
Day / Agenda
1 / Warm Up - Give an example of a solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. Notes - States of Matter CW #1- Draw a model of each state of matter, showing the atoms and their relation to each other in each state. Notes - Physical vs. Chemical Properties and Changes CW #2- Physical vs Chemical Properties and Changes T.O.D.- Group the pictures into physical or chemical properties/changes
2 / Warm Up - Give 3 examples of a physical change and 3 examples of a chemical change. Notes - Pure Substances: Elements and Compounds Project: Element Posters T.O.D. - Give 3 interesting facts you learned about your element today while researching.
3 / Warm Up - Fill in the Venn diagram comparing and contrasting elements and compounds. Notes- Mixtures and Separation Methods CW #3 - Pure Substances vs. Mixtures CW #4 - Design your own experiment - With your partner, investigate the properties of 4 substances and develop a procedure to separate a mixture made from the 4 substances. Closing - Share your procedure with another group and discuss differences.
4 / Warm Up- How will you be safe in lab today? Give examples. Lab: Separation Challenge - Using your teacher-approved procedure, attempt to separate your mixture of 4 substances. Review for Unit 2 Quiz on Matter- Complete the graphic Organizer for Matter T.O.D. - Compare your group's results with another group. Discuss any differences.
5 / Warm Up- Quick Q & A Review Read article, "Recycling Aluminum" and respond to question. Quiz: Matter
