Scholarship Information

GENERAL INFORMATION PERTAINING TO ALL SCHOLARSHIPS

  • Student must be a current senior attending school at a LansingSchool DistrictHigh School.
  • Student must be a graduating senior.
  • Student must provide a high school transcript, personal statement, career goals, letter of recommendation, an acceptance letter from an accredited community/2-year/4-year college/university
  • Provide a list of extra curricular activities and pertinent background and financial information.
  • Student must fill out the LEAF Scholarship application and submit all materials by the printed due date.

John Aldinger 4 Year Educational Scholarship

  • $1,000.00 per year will be awarded to each student for 4 years for a total of $4,000.00
  • Money will cover tuition, books and lab fees only
  • Student must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher

Dr. E. Sharon Banks Educator Scholarship

Dr. Banks retired after serving seven years as superintendent of the LansingSchool District

  • Student will be awarded $1,000.00
  • Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Money can be used to cover tuition and textbooks

Dr. Eva Evans Performing Arts Scholarship

Dr. Evans retired after serving as a Lansing School District Administrator for many years.

  • Student will be awarded $1,000.00
  • Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Only students studying visual or performing arts may apply

Clayton Kowalk Athletic/Coaching Scholarship

Mr. Kowalk retired after 35 years of service with the Lansing Schools as a teacher, coach and Director of Coaching at

SextonHigh School. His Sexton basketball team had two State Championships.

  • Student will be awarded $1,000.00
  • Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Student must have an interest in pursuing a degree in the field of physical education, coaching, athletics, athletic training or teaching.
  • Money can cover tuition, books and lab fees only

Dr. Laurence MacQueen Educator Scholarship:

Dr. MacQueen served on the Lansing Educational Advancement Foundation and was a leader in the MEA.

  • Only students entering the field of education are eligible to apply
  • Student will be awarded $1,000.00
  • Students must submit two letters of recommendation
  • Personal Statement must include an answer to the following question, “What characteristics/experiences do I have that will allow me to influence others in a positive manner?”

J. Mark Mehaffey Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship

Mark Mehaffey is a local artist and retired Lansing School District Art teacher

  • Student must: be a graduating senior; show potential for leadership; have a grade point average of at least 2.0
  • Student must be enrolled as a full-time student at LansingCommunity College pursuing any career or program, but must enroll in an art course.
  • Student must exhibit a need for financial assistance.
  • The scholarship may be used for art supplies, tuition for visual arts classes, materials or lab fees.

Dr. W. E. Maldonado/Sparrow Scholarship

Dr. Maldonado is a retired former Chief of Medical Affairs at SparrowHospital.

  • Student will be awarded $1,000.00
  • Only students enrolled in the Health Careers Programs are eligible to apply
  • Priority will be given to students who have demonstrated and who have completed the health careers training program
  • Money can be used to cover tuition, books and lab fees only

Cecil Nickel Scholarship

Mr. Nickel was a physical education teacher and coach and a phenomenal supporter of Sextons youth.

  • Students will be awarded up to $2,500.00
  • Student must be enrolled at SextonHigh School
  • Criteria for this award are still being developed.

South Lansing Kiwanis Scholarship:

  • Student will be awarded $1,000.00 for one year.
  • Money can be used to cover tuition, books and lab fees only.

Joan Weaver Visual Arts Scholarship

Joan Weaver was an arts teacher for many years in the LansingSchool District.

  • Student will be awarded $500.00 for one year.
  • Money can be used to cover tuition, books and lab fees only.
  • Student must major in the visual arts.

Carnegie/Zamora Scholarship: ARAMARK Education has partnered with LEAF to offer this scholarship for Chicano/Latino Students.

  • Only Chicano/Latino students are eligible to apply.
  • If applying for this scholarship, please note your race on the application next to your name.
  • Student will be awarded $500
  • Students must a short narrative about the importance of continued education beyond high school and why it is important to the Latino community

Culinary Arts/Nutrition Scholarship: ARAMARK Education has partnered with LEAF to offer this scholarship for Culinary Arts and Nutrition Majors.

  • Student will be awarded $2000
  • Only students studying culinary arts or nutrition may apply
  • Money can be used to cover, tuition, books, transportation, lab fees only
