“Ramblin” Thoughts”
Here I sit writing up the latest issue of the Skywriter and decided to add a few notes on the world of breeding dogs.
While writing this, my husband is driving back from the vet’s office after having a c-section done on one of my bitches who has had some difficulty in whelping, so we decided to do a scheduled c-section for her last litter. Turns out. it was just one puppy in there. We were worried enough about him (yes, it’s a black male!) to have an ultrasound done yesterday. Mom and baby are doing fine. So as I am whiling away the time, I added up the cost. A total of $1355 to get this boy into the world. Four hundred to get the bitch pregnant, including progesterone tests. A $200 service for the stud dog (a savings of $600 which would have been due if there was a full litter). $115 for an ultrasound, $700 for the c-section by a specialist reproductive vet near Hartford. A bitch that dragged my husband to the car, with an active baby in the basket – priceless!! And people think that we make money on breeding dogs!
Ever had a pup that just didn’t seem to thrive after birth? Here’s some words of wisdom I have followed many times over the years.
This comes from Ann Seranne’s “The Joy of Breeding Your Own Show Dog” Chapter 7 – Using Glucose to Save Puppies.
“As soon as a bitch is approaching parturition, make a 5% glucose solution by mixing 1 tsp. White corn syrup into 4 TBL of boiled water. Add a few grains each of sodium salt (table salt) and potassium chloride (salt substitute). This resembles a ringer’s glucose – saline solution, but of course, cannot be used for subcutaneous or IV injection because it is not sterile.
Put the solution into a dropper bottle. As soon as a whelp is dry and breathing normally, weigh it on a gram scale and give 5-6 drops of the solution for each 100 grams of body weight. It is best to administer the glucose drop by drop on its tongue and not introduce it directly into the stomach by tube. By giving it on the tongue the swallowing reflexes are being developed. Make sure the puppy has swallowed each drop before the next is given. Usually even the weakest whelp will accept it gratefully. Then put the puppy with its dam for stimulation and warmth.”
Ann recommends weighing and repeating the glucose every 4 hours the first day until the puppy shows signs of gaining weight. Then offer it every 8 hours the second day.
Ann further states, “If a puppy does not catch hold at the end of 24 hours do not let anyone talk you into giving it milk or milk substitute. Do not introduce any supplemental food into the puppy’s system for the first 48 hours. Energy and a reserve supply of glycogen is what it needs it at this point in its tentative life”
This book has been my bible for both breeding and whelping advice. This chapter that I have quoted has saved more puppies than I can possibly count.

Your Dog Doesn't Have to be an Outlaw
by Dog Scouts
How does this sweet, angelic puppy turn into the monstrous bane of your existence? It’s simple. Just don’t do anything to raise him right, and you’ll teach him to be an outlaw. You’ll have a carpet-wetting, couch eating, child chasing, food stealing, hand biting, garbage raiding, yard digging, barking, wandering outlaw. Every single decision your dog makes requires a choice. You simply have to teach him to choose wisely. To do this you apply consequences to each thing your dog does. Traditional training (yuck) relied on waiting until the dog did something wrong so that you could punish him. Well, guess what? From the dog’s point of view, he’s making choices based on what rewards he gets. Oops! We’re working against each other here! The dog tries lying quietly at your feet. Well, rats! That didn’t do him any good... “Let’s try another behavior to get some attention,” the dog thinks. “Ithink I’ll sit here and not cause any trouble. I’ll not bark and I’ll not jump up. I’ll just stare adoringly at my master.” Oops. “That’s not working, either, I can’t seem to get any attention from my owner. Not a glance, not a stroke, not a word... I wonder what on earth I can do to get someone to notice me around here... I think I’ll run at the glass door and bark at the squirrels.”
