Galef Honors MTA Metro-North Railroad’s President Permut in Albany Today to be Recognized on Assembly Floor

Coveted Brunel Award is Testament to the Positive Shift in Company Culture

(June 6, 2012) Assemblywoman Sandy Galef was pleased to welcome MTA Metro-North President Howard Permut to the floor of the New York State Assembly chamber in Albany today to be recognized for the outstanding achievements of the MTA Metro-North Railroad, the first American railroad to win the coveted International Brunel Award.

MTA Metro-North Railroad received the Jury Prize for Overall Design Excellence from the Watford Group and The Center for Industrial Design in Transportation, in 2011 from a field of 43 railways from 15 countries on three continents which entered 150 projects. This is an award conferred only once every three years by an international jury of prominent leaders in the railroad, architectural, and industrial design industries. The International Brunel Award is a competition open to public and private railroads to recognize and promote the best in railway architecture, engineering, landscape and environmental design, product design, and locomotive design, among other things.

“It is a great honor to recognize New York’s premier railroad system for receiving such an outstanding award,” said Assemblywoman Sandy Galef. “The MTA Metro-North Railroad is a truly exceptional institution that railroads around the world look to as a model and inspiration, and I am proud to invite them to be recognized by my colleagues on the floor of the Chamber. They have made so much progress in the last 30 years, much of it attributable to the current leadership, and specifically to the foresight and expertise of my neighbor and constituent, Howard Permut, the President of MTA Metro-North.”

Commenting on the success of the railroad and his recognition in the Assembly Chamber, President Howard Permut said, “This award is a testament to the dedication and pride shown every day by Metro-North’s employees, from train engineers to civil engineers and from coach cleaners to coach designers, who’s first priority is safety and who are united in our mission to become a brand name for excellence. It is a great honor to accept this recognition on behalf of all my colleagues.”

The combined success and quality of Metro-North’s individual entries to the competition resulted in this achievement. In the recent past the railroad has developed and constructed projects including the Yankees-E. 153rd Street Station, the MTA Operations Control Center, and the Croton-Harmon Locomotive and Coach Shop. The railroad has been further recognized for its extraordinary shift of company culture and its focus on customers under the leadership of President Permut.
