1.Our משנה says עד מתי שואלין את הגשמים ... רבי מאיר אומר עד שיצא ניסן

A)רבי מאיר says that ותן טל ומטר is said throughout all ניסן. How did he learn this from this פסוק?

B)When does יורה rain typically fall?

רב נחמן - Question #1

D)Based on this, what question did רב נחמן ask רבי יצחק?

1.E)How did רבי יצחק, in the name of רבי יוחנן, answer?

2.In the days of יואל, there was a seven-year famine. Four years of locusts followed by three years of drought. At the end of the seventh year, rain did not fall through the month of אדר. On the first of ניסן, it finally rained. The נביא told בני ישראל to plant their grain.

A)How did theבני ישראלinitially respond and on what basis?

B)Theבני ישראלthen went and planted their grain according to the נביא’s instructions. How did Hashem reward them?

C)The גמרא tells us that they planted their grains from the second through the fourth of ניסן. It rained again on the fifth of ניסן. Being that it takes six months for grain to grow, from where did they get grain to bring the קרבן עומר? The קרבן עומר must be brought on the sixteenth of ניסן.

הזרעים בדמעה ברנה יקצרו: הלוך ילך ובכה נשא משך הזרע בא יבוא ברנה נשא אלמתיו: (תהילים קכו:ה-ו)

D)הלוך ילך ובכה, נשא משך הזרע, he who walks along weeping, bearing the seed container. The גמרא says that this cannot be referring to people. Why not?

E)As per רבי יהודה, if this was not referring to people, who was it referring to?

F)How did רבי יהודה explain the words בא יבא ברנה?

G)What did רב חסדא and some say a ברייתא, learn from the words נושא אלומותיו, bearing his sheaves?

3. רב נחמן - Question #2

רב נחמןasked from the first פסוק above regarding the seven years of famine andרבי יצחקin the name of רבי יוחנן, answered him. Based on his answer, we see how severe the famine was. How does the secondפסוקabove relate to רבי יוחנן’s answer?

לא אעשה חרון אפי לא שוב לשחת אפרים כי א-ל אנכי ולא איש בקרבך קדוש ולא אבוא בעיר: (הושע יא:ט)

4.רב נחמן - Question #3

The פסוק says, בקרבך קדוש, there is something holy in your midst, ולא אבוא בעיר, and I (Hashem) will not enter the city. רב נחמן asked רבי יצחק, how does it make sense that because there is something holy in your midst, Hashem would not enter the city? How did רבי יצחק, in the name of רבי יוחנן, answer?

ובאחת יבערו ויכסלו מוסר הבלים עץ הוא: (ירמיהו י:ח)

הבל המה מעשה תעתעים בעת פקדתם יאבדו: (ירמיהו י:טו)

5.רב נחמן - Question #4

According to רבי יצחקin the name רבי יוחנן, what does the word הבל refer to and how does he learn this?

כי שתים רעות עשה עמי אתי עזבו מקור מים חיים לחצב להם בארות בארת נשברים אשר לא יכלו המים: (ירמיהו ב:יג)

כי עברו איי כתיים וראו וקדר שלחו והתבוננו מאד וראו הן היתה כזאת: ההימיר גוי אלהים והמה לא אלהים ועמי המיר כבודו בלוא יועיל: (ירמיהו ב י-יא)

6.רב נחמן - Question #5

A)רב נחמן asked רבי יצחק, are there only two evil things “My nation” did? There were twenty-four. What does רב נחמן mean by twenty-four. (two explanations in רש"י).

6.B)רבי יצחק answered in the name of רבי יוחנן that they violated one sin that is equal to two. What is the sin?

C)The כותיים worshiped fire. The קדריים worshiped water. What’s the גמרא’scommenton the כותיים’s worship?

D) Based on the above, explain why the sin of עבודה זרה is equal to adouble offense?

7.רב נחמן - Question #6

ויהי כאשר זקן שמואל, when שמואל became old. שמואל died when he was fifty-two years old. רב נחמן asked רבי יצחק, how then can it be that the פסוק says, “When שמואל became old”?

After שאול sinned by not completely wiping out עמלק, Hashem said that he regretted having made שאול king and wanted to kill him. שמואל protested to Hashem. He said “You have made me equal to משה and אהרן. You were not מבטל their handiwork (יהושע) in their lives. So too, You should not be מבטל my handiwork (שאול) in my life”.

כביכול, Hashem had a conundrum …

A)Why couldn’t Hashem let שאול die?

B)Why couldn’t Hashem let שמואל die young?

C)Why not leave it that neither שאול nor שמואל die?

D)What did Hashem do to solve this conundrum and how did רבי יוחנן use this to answer רב נחמן’s question?
