What is Geometry?

This course covers the major topics of plane geometry such as parallelism, congruency, similarity, coordinates, transformations, measurement formulas, trigonometry, two and three dimensional figures, logic and proof writing with an emphasis on insight rather than traditional rigorous proof. Applications of various geometric concepts are stressed. Algebraic and computational skills are reviewed and reinforced throughout the course.

Materials needed for class

1. Three-ring binder that is used for MATH ONLY

2. Loose leaf paper

3. 2 or 3 pencils with erasers

4. Pens

5. Highlighter

7. Calculator (TI-84, TI84 plus are strongly recommended)

8. Geometry: Concepts and Skills (McDougal Littell) is the required book.

Classroom Expectations:

Students are responsible for reading the textbook, daily homework assignments, class notes / activities, warm-ups, and being prepared for class, which includes bringing all required materials (see above).

Students must be seated when the bell rings.

This class often sees a collection of students with carrying math abilities. Therefore, class time is spent not only on explanation, but also on warm-up exercises, peer mediation and homework. Maturity and respect are the fundamentals for this class.

Rules:

  • Be prompt. Be polite. Be prepared. Be productive.
  • No food is allowed in the classroom.
  • Swearing is strictly prohibited!
  • NO CELL PHONES!

Absences:

  • If you miss notes or homework, please check my website, or check the bins in my classroom for any handouts. You will have as many days as you missed to make up these assignments. You may show them to me for full credit (for excused absences only, of course) when I am checking homework for the day.
  • If you miss a quiz or test, it needs to be made up within one week of your return. If it is not made up in that time period, it will be counted as an E.
  • Any quiz or test that is missed due to an unexcused absence will be counted as an E.

Tests and Quizzes:

  • Dates for tests and quizzes will be posted on the chalkboard, on your assignment sheets, and on my website.
  • Quizzes and tests will be returned in class so that we may go over them and learn from them, but must stay in the classroom.
  • There are no retakes of tests or quizzes.

Homework:

As in any mathematics class, practice and reinforcement of topics introduced in class is essential. For this reason, homework problems will be assigned daily and will be discussed. Homework provides daily feedback on the material we are learning and how well you understand it. Please use homework with this purpose in mind. If you miss a day, you are expected to get that assignment and turn it in the next day. Assignments are accepted one day late for half credit. Those students who are not prepared to work diligently and daily cannot expect to succeed in this class.

Grading Scale:

Grades:

  • Homework will be checked every day for completion and is worth 4 points each day. Late homework will be accepted only 1 day late, for half credit. Homework will be counted as 10% of the quarter grade.
  • Notes will be checked every day for completion and are worth 4 points each day. Notes will be counted as 10% of the quarter grade.
  • Warm-up problems will be given each day as we start class. They may or may not be collected on any given day. Warm-ups will be counted as 5% of the quarter grade.
  • Quizzes are usually given approximately halfway through a chapter. Each of these quizzes will be counted as two weights. Tests will be given at the end of each chapter. Each test will count as three weights. Altogether, quizzes and tests will be counted as 75% of the quarter grade.
