Minutes for Mission 2016: …bringing out the God-colours in the world

Children’s Story: Catch a Rainbow

You will need the following items: red, blue.and yellow food colouring; 1 cup of milk; dish soap; a shallow bowl.

Begin by pouring the milk into the bowl. Add three drops of red food colouring to one edge of the bowl. One-third of the way along the edge of the bowl, add three drops of blue food colouring. One-third of the way along the edge add three drops of yellow food colouring. When you are adding the drops, be careful not to move the bowl.

In the centre of the bowl squeeze one drop of dish soap. The soap will not mix with the milk—it will float to the top and spread over the surface. As it spreads, it grabs the food colouring. Where the colours meet, they combine to form new colours: red and blue = purple, red and yellow = orange, blue and yellow=green.

Today we are going to catch a rainbow! (Add the dish soap at this point.)

We have just captured a rainbow. Rainbows are wonderful things: they are symbols of God’s colours in the world. Some of the God-colours in the world are hope, peace, joy, and love. We share God-colours when we share of ourselves in hope, peace, joy, and love. Mission & Service is the heart and soul of this United Church of ours, and the best way for us to share God-colours with the world is through our gifts for Mission & Service.

The rainbow is a sign of God’s love for us that we are invited to share with one another. In the United Church we do this through our support of Mission & Service. It is a loving partnership with people here in Canada and around the world. Let’s catch the Mission & Service rainbow and share it with people all over the world.

Let us pray:

Dear God, thank you for the rainbow.
Please help us to share the colours with the world
so that all may see your love shining.
Help us to share that love so we can mend the world.
Amen.
