As a (insert medical occupation), I am keenly aware that this year more than 1.6 million Americans will hear the words “you have cancer.” Cancer touches everyone: families and friends, colleagues and caregivers. That is why I have joined the growing number of people who want America’s lawmakers to make the fight against cancer a priority. Many of the most important cancer decisions are made not just in our offices, but in our State House, in Congress, and in the White House. Government officials make decisions every day about health issues that affect the lives and well being of our patients, families and friends.
I’d like to tell you about the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), which was started by the American Cancer Society to encourage a growing number of advocates tofight back against cancer. Defeating cancer relies as much on public policy as it does on science. Lawmakers and policy makers play a critical role in decisions that could save lives from cancer. By supporting laws and policies such as sustained federal investments in cancer research, stronger tobacco control efforts, improved access to care and better quality of life for patients, lawmakers and policy makers at every level can get involved and stay involved in the fight against cancer.
I joined ACS CAN because it cantake on exactly the kind of legislative campaigns that are designed to elevate cancer prevention, early detection, and survivorship, increase the nation’s commitment to cancer research, and expand access to health care. I know that through strong citizen action, we can make death and suffering from cancer a thing of the past.
This is an exciting time to get involved with ACS CAN, as you will see the significant impact your commitmentwill have in the fight against cancer. Please join me, and other individuals like yourself who are dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health threat, in fighting cancer through ACSCAN.
