SECTION 23 05 53

IDENTIFICATION FOR HVAC SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 SUMMARY

A.Section Includes:

1.Extent of mechanical identification work required by this Section is indicated on Drawings or specified in other Division 23 sections.

2.Types of identification devices specified in this Section include the following:

a.PrePrinted Adhesive Pressure Sensitive Vinyl Pipe Markers

b.Valve Tags

c.Valve Schedules

d.Engraved Plastic Laminated Signs

e.Color Coded Dots

3.Mechanical identification furnished as part of factory fabricated equipment is specified as part of equipment assembly in other Division23 sections.

4.Refer to Division26 sections for identification requirements of electrical work; not work of this section.

1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A.Manufacturer Qualifications: Firms regularly engaged in manufacture of identification devices of types and sizes required, whose products have been in satisfactory use in similar service for not less than 10 years.

B.Codes and Standards:

1.ANSI Standards: Meeting requirements of ANSI A13.1 for lettering size, length of color field, colors, and viewing angles of identification devices.

1.03 SUBMITTALS

A.Product Data: Submit manufacturer's technical Product Data and installation instructions for each identification material and device required.

B.Schedules: Submit valve schedule with Operations and Maintenance Manual for each piping system, typewritten and reproduced on 81/2inch by 11inch paper (see AppendixA for example). Tabulate valve number, piping system, system abbreviation (as shown on tag), location of valve (room or space), and variations for identification (if any). Mark valves that are intended for emergency shutoff and similar special uses, by special "flags", in margin of schedule.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01 MANUFACTURERS

A.Acceptable Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements of the Contract Documents, acceptable manufacturers are as follows or Owner approved equal:

1.Brady (W. H.) Company, Signmark Division

2.Seton Name Plate Corporation

2.02 MECHANICAL IDENTIFICATION MATERIALS

A.General: Provide manufacturer's standard products of categories and types required for each application as referenced in other Division23 sections. Where more than single type is specified for application, selection is installer's option, but provide single selection for each product category.

2.03 PAINTED IDENTIFICATION MATERIALS

A.Stencils: Not permitted.

2.04 PLASTIC PIPE MARKERS

A.Pressure-Sensitive Type: Provide manufacturer's standard preprinted, permanent adhesive, color coded, pressure sensitive vinyl pipe markers in accordance with ANSI A13.1.

1.Labels to describe contents and direction of flow; secured to pipe with full selfadhesive banding around pipe at each end of the label, lapping 11/2inches. Labels shall contain additional wording to best describe and point the destination of the system.

B.Small Pipes: For external diameters less than 6inches, including insulation if any, provide fullband pipe markers, extending 360degrees around pipe at each location, fastened by (1)of the following methods:

1.Adhesive lap joint in pipe marker overlap.

2.Taped to pipe (or insulation) with color coded plastic adhesive tape with directional arrows not less than 3/4inch wide; full circle at both ends of pipe marker, tape lapped 11/2inches.

C.Large Pipes: For external diameters of 6inches and larger, including insulation if any, provide either fullband or striptype pipe markers, but not narrower than 3times letter height (and of required length), fastened by one of the following methods:

1.Taped to pipe (or insulation) with color coded plastic adhesive tape with directional arrows not less than 11/2inches wide; full circle at both ends of pipe marker, tape lapped 3inches.

D.Lettering: Manufacturer's standard preprinted nomenclature which best describes piping system in each instance, as selected by Architect/Engineer, in case of variance with names as shown or specified.

1.Arrows: Print each pipe marker with arrows indicating direction of flow, either integrally with piping system service lettering to accommodate both directions, or as separate unit of plastic.

E.Underground Pipe Markers: Bright colored continuously printed plastic ribbon tape, 6inches wide by 3.5 mils thick, manufactured for direct burial, with aluminum foil core for location by nonferric metal detectors.

2.05 PLASTIC TAPE

A.General: Provide manufacturer's standard color coded pressure sensitive (selfadhesive) vinyl tape, not less than 3mils thick.

B.Width: Provide 11/2inch wide tape markers on pipes with outside diameters, including insulation if any, of less than 6inches, 21/2inch wide tape for larger pipes.

C.Colors: In accordance with ANSI A13.1, except where another color selection is indicated.

1.In building remodeling, coordinate with existing color coding.

2.06 VALVE TAGS

A.Brass Valve Tags: Provide 19gauge polished brass valve tags with stamp engraved piping system abbreviation in 1/4inch high letters and sequenced valve numbers 1/2inches high, with 5/32inch hole for fastener.

1.Provide 1 1/2inch diameter tags.

2.Fasten with solid brass "S" hooks and chains.

B.Valve Tag Fasteners: Provide manufacturer's standard solid brass wire link chain with solid brass Shooks.

C.Access Panel Markers: Provide manufacturer's standard 1/16inch thick engraved plastic laminate access panel markers, with abbreviations and numbers corresponding to concealed valve. Include 1/8inch center hole to allow attachment.

2.07 VALVE SCHEDULES

A.General: Each page of the Valve Schedule, 81/2inch by 11inch, laminated in clear plastic rigid sheets. Back side shall be blank. Provide (3) sets of complete schedule for inclusion in the O&M Manual. In building remodeling, coordinate with existing valve schedule.

A.General Requirements:

1.Provide engraved plastic laminated signs or plastic equipment markers that comply with MPS Identification Program for all major pieces of equipment (Asset ID), in accordance with the following color code:

a.Brown: Cooling Equipment and Components

b.Orange: Steam Heating Equipment and Components

c.Red Hot: Water Heating Equipment and Components

d.Brown/Orange: Combination Cooling and Steam Heating Equipment and Components

e.Brown/Red Hot: Combination Cooling and Water Heating Equipment and Components

f.Yellow: Energy Reclamation Equipment and Components

g.Blue: Equipment and Components Not Meeting Above Criteria

2.For hazardous equipment, use colors and designs recommended by ANSI A13.1.

3.In building remodeling, coordinate with existing color coding.

4.Locate on or near each major item of mechanical equipment.

B.Nomenclature: Include the following, matching terminology on schedules as closely as possible:

1.Name and Plan Number

2.Equipment Service

3.Design Capacity

4.Other Design Parameters; such as pressure drop, entering and leaving conditions, rpm, etc.

C.Size: Provide approximate 21/2inch by 4inch markers for control devices, dampers, and valves; and 41/2inch by 6inch for equipment.

2.09 DUCTWORK IDENTIFICATION

A.General Requirements: Provide manufacturer’s standard laminated plastic, color coded duct markers.

1.Labels shall be pressure sensitive type, preprinted, color coded, pressure sensitive (selfadhesive) vinyl. Labels to identify air supply, return, exhaust, intake, and relief ductwork with duct markers and arrows, showing ductwork service and direction of flow, in black or white (whichever provides most contrast with ductwork color). Labels shall contain additional wording to best describe and point the destination of the system. Minimum size of 1.5” x 4.0”. Letters shall be a minimum of ½” height.

2.Standard fiberboard stencils are not acceptable.

3.Color of letter shall be black lettering on a yellow background. In building remodeling, coordinate with existing color coding.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01 GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

A.Coordination: Where identification is to be applied to surfaces which require insulation, painting, or other covering or finish, including valve tags in finished mechanical spaces, install identification after completion of covering and painting. Install identification prior to installation of acoustical ceilings and similar removable concealment.

3.02 PIPING SYSTEM IDENTIFICATION

A.General Requirements:

1.Install pipe markers and include arrows to show normal direction of flow.

2.Locate pipe markers and color bands as follows wherever piping is exposed to view in occupied spaces, machine rooms, accessible maintenance spaces (shafts, tunnels, plenums), and exterior nonconcealed locations.

a.Near each valve and control device;

b.Near each branch, excluding short takeoffs for terminal units, mark each pipe at branch where there could be question of flow pattern;

c.Near locations where pipes pass through walls or floors/ceilings, or enter nonaccessible enclosures;

d.At access doors, and similar access points that permit view of concealed piping;

e.Near major equipment items and other points of origination and termination;

f.Spaced intermittently at maximum spacing of 50feet along each piping run, except reduce spacing to 25feet in congested areas of piping and equipment; and

g.On piping above removable acoustical ceilings.

3.All identification and labeling shall be completed before above ceiling inspections will take place.

4.Underground pipe markers shall be installed 8to 10inches below grade, directly above buried pipes.

3.03 DUCTWORK IDENTIFICATION

A.General Requirements:

1.In each space where ductwork is exposed, or concealed only by removable ceiling system, locate identification near point where ductwork originates or continues into concealed enclosures (shaft, underground or similar concealment), and at 50foot spacing along exposed runs.

2.Provide duct markers on each access door in ductwork and housings, indicating purpose of access (to what equipment) and other maintenance and operating instructions, and appropriate safety and procedural information.

3.Where access doors are concealed above acoustical ceilings or similar concealment, plasticized tags may be installed for identification in lieu of specified signs, at installer=s option.

4.Near major equipment items and other points of origination and termination.

A.General Requirements: Provide valve tag on every valve and control device in each piping system, excluding check valves, valves within factory fabricated equipment units, and similar roughin connections of enduse fixtures and units. List each tagged valve in valve schedule for each piping system.

3.05 EQUIPMENT IDENTIFICATION

A.Concealed Equipment:

1.Color code for mechanical equipment concealed above ceilings. Apply 1/2inch diameter adhesive backed color coded dots to ceiling grids as close as possible to concealed valves and equipment. Colors to be used to identify equipment as follows:

a.Brown: Cooling Equipment and Components

b.Orange: Steam Heating Equipment and Components

c.Red Hot: Water Heating Equipment and Components

d.Brown/Orange: Combination Cooling and Steam Heating Equipment and Components

e.Brown/Red Hot: Combination Cooling and Water Heating Equipment and Components

f.Yellow: Energy Reclamation Equipment and Components

g.Blue: Equipment and Components Not Meeting Above Criteria

2.Identification shall be for the following equipment as follows:

a.VAV Boxes (with unit numbers)(self-adhesive on ceiling grid)

b.Reheat Coil (with unit numbers)

c.Fan Coil Unit (with unit numbers)

d.Heat Pumps (with unit numbers)

e.Exhaust Fans (with unit numbers)

f.Air Handling Units (with unit numbers)

g.Control Valves (with valve numbers)

h.ShutOff Valves (with valve numbers)

i.Fire and Fire/Smoke Dampers

j.Temperature Control Controller and Equipment

B.Non-Concealed Equipment:

1.Mechanically fasten engraved plastic laminate sign or plastic equipment marker on or near each major item of equipment as specified herein if not otherwise specified for each item or device. For outdoor equipment, mechanically fasten the engraved signage to the north side of equipment. Provide signs with a minimum letter sizing of ½” for the following general categories of equipment and colors as indicated in Part2 above:

a.Air Handling Units, Rooftop Units, Energy Recovery Units, Return/Relief Fans

b.Exhaust Fans, Power Roof Ventilators; Life safety items like refrigerant leak EFs shall be tagged in bold letters; Do Not Turn Off. Life Safety System.

c.Boilers, Chillers, Heat Exchangers, Cooling Towers

d.Pumps, Tanks, Pressure Vessels

e.Compressors, Condensing Units

f.Water Treatment Systems, Humidifiers

g.Main Control Valves and Safety Equipment

h.Meters, Variable Speed Drives

i.Temperature Control Panels

j.Chilled Water Cooling Coils (no glycol in system). Provide the following sign: "Drain chilled water cooling coil when outdoor temperature reaches 35degreesF. Flush with 50percent propylene glycol/water solution and blow out again."

C.Miscellaneous:

1.Attach selfadhesive vinyl labels at all duct access doors used to reset fusible links or actuators on fire, fire/smoke, or smoke dampers. Lettering shall be a minimum of 1/2inch high. Labels shall indicate damper type.

3.06 BOILER ROOM AND MECHANICAL ROOM PIPING PAINT SCHEDULE

A.General Requirements: MechanicalHeating Contractor shall paint piping in Boiler Room and Mechanical Rooms to match the following schedule. Contractor shall prepare and submit a minimum of (3) color charts listing color selection numbers, and manufacturer for approval prior to beginning painting of piping, for approval prior to beginning painting of piping.

A.Adjusting: Relocate any mechanical identification device that has become visually blocked by work of this division or other division.

B.Cleaning: Clean face of identification devices and glass frames of valve charts.
