Wiltshire Masters Newsletter 3

September 2017

Introduction.

This is my third occasional newsletter. I would appreciate any comments, good or bad, on this newsletter and anything else to do with Masters & Seniors (18-24) swimming in Wiltshire.

If you would like to add an article to a future newsletter, or if there is a topic you would like covered please let me know.

Inter-county masters gala 2017.

Mark Robertson is organising the Wiltshire team for this year. The date of the event is 19th November and it takes place at Weston super Mare. Please put the date in your diary.

First gala of 2018 not at half term !

Some time ago I asked Sandra Yeoman if we could avoid half terms for our masters county galas. It is not easy to do as we have to avoid national, regional & local events that might need Wiltshire officials. Anyway she has moved the first gala of the year to March 3rd.
She hopes to be able to move the summer one for 2019.
Other dates in 2018 are June 2nd, September 29th.

Development Day ?

Are any of you interested in the idea of having a Wiltshire Masters swimming development day ? The usual format is something like a morning and afternoon swimming session with a coach, a talk on some aspect of swimming and some gym work. So it would need experts to lead each session and the facilities to run them. It would need significant interest to get enough people to cover the costs so I need to know if this is attractive.

At the other end of the cost scale we could set up 1 or 2 hours of talks over Skype so nobody needs to travel or get wet ! I’ve never done this but I expect some of you will have done a group Skype and could advise on its possibilities.

Rob Snell (repeated as no response so far)

As I am sure you know he does an excellent job of inviting entries, setting up the gala program (which Rob Hart implements on the night) and sending out the results. He feels it is really important that someone takes on the job of backing him up.

So he is looking for a volunteer to do that. It takes a few days work around each of the three galas and that work can be done from home. Access to a Windows computer is necessary because the software does not work on a Mac.

If you are interested please contact him at

Also please note when sending gala entries to him, please give phone number and don’t send money to him – it must go to the county treasurer.

World Masters Championships in Budapest

I have not been to Budapest before and found it an interesting city. A lot of history in the central area, the Danube running through it, and at least three thermal baths. Their swimming facilities were incredible. Two centres which each had two 50m competition pools and two warm up pools. One of the two centres was mainly indoor and is where the elite world championships were held recently. The other centre was mainly open air and on an island in the Danube.

Normally there would be only 2 competition pools; one for women and the other for men, which rotated daily. Because of the extra capacity they split the pools by age group;

·  25+, 30+, 35+

·  40+, 45+, 50+

·  55+ and 60+

·  65+ to 95+

This meant that with 7am warm up for 8am start, most people were finished around lunchtime.

This is my 9th championships and in each there have been people in the 95-9 age group - amazing.

As usual we all got free use of public transport which in Budapest includes bus, train, underground, boat, tram and trolley bus. I used all but the last. We did a lot of sight-seeing which did make me very tired in my last event (200m fly). I am not a lot faster than the qualifying times but I enjoy being part of it. I am told there were 6,600 swimmers (probably from ~ 70 countries). There was also water polo, diving, open water and syncro.

In 2019 the next one takes place in Gwangju, South Korea.
