Lead Engineer

Basic Function

The lead engineer will be the engineering lead for a number of projects, providing day to day guidance to a small team of engineers.

Working with the engineering team, they are expected to develop the project technical requirements, produce concept design solutions, detailed designs, verification and test plans, assembly instructions and comprehensive reporting.

They will also be responsible for the configuration control and implementation of engineering changes within the business.

Reporting Relationship

The role reports directly to the Engineering Director.

Responsible For

The lead engineer is responsible for the delivery of the technical data pack to the business, on time, to budget, to a high standard.

They will be responsible for the following direct reports;

Design Engineer

CAD technician

Analysis expert

Additional resource, as required by the program/s.

The size and make up of the team will change from time to time, and be driven by program and project deliverables.

Duties & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Lead Engineer will;

Provide a technical lead for engineering programs.

Lead a team of engineers day to day.

Work with the Commercial team supporting customer enquiries, generating concept designs and supporting documentation.

Generate and manage engineering requirements.

Produce project engineering data packs on time, to budget and to high quality.

Lead design reviews, both internally, and with customers.

Be responsible for project configuration management of controlled engineering drawing, models and documentation.

Work with Program Managers to deliver engineering actions.

Work to develop a program of testing and development with the engineering team.

Lead and support internal and customer technical meetings.

Produce detailed designs with supporting reports.

Pier review concepts, designs, reports, documentation and data.

Conduct FEA analysis studies, either by direction of sub-contract resource, or personal execution of smaller studies.

Knowledge & Ability Required

Degree qualified in mechanical or related engineering discipline.

Experience of hydraulics and high pressure and gas sealing technologies essential.

Demonstrable mechanical engineering and analytical skills.

Professional in approach and performance, with strong communication skills.

Experience of working with customers and developing concepts to meet their needs.

Experience in the Defence sector is highly desirable.

Be a competent user of FEA tools, and able to direct others in this type of analysis.

Have an understanding of the protection of business interests when working with customers.

Work with other areas of the business, particularly the manufacturing and quality functions.

Be structured and methodical in their working practices.

Some work outside normal office hours may be necessary. Travel to and from other sites will be required.

Security – All candidates must be in a position to obtain UK security clearance. Further restrictions may apply to certain projects.

Terms and Conditions;

37 hour week. The candidate must be prepared to work additional hours when necessary. This position is not eligible for overtime payments.

This is a permanent position.
