SELECTIVE UNIT 3 (S03)

(Multiples)

(July 2013)

Unit Statement: In this unit the student will explore the concept of multiplication as a short form of showing additions. The goal for this unit is prepare the student to connect addition to multiples and arithmetic’s. Real life experiences the student can relate to, including problem solving skills will complement instruction in order for the student to master the unit.

Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery)

Problem solving and higher order thinking components are essential for 'A' level mastery. Each TSW can contain problem solving and higher order thinking components (as found in suggested text).

1.  The Student Will use numbers 1 to 10 to count in sequential order up.

2.  TSW identify even and odd number to 100 numbers.

3.  TSW identify the different symbols that represent multiplication.

4.  TSW understand the concept of multiplication by seeing an array.

5.  TSW identify the relationship between addition and multiplication.

6.  TSW create a sequence of numbers to 100 counting by 2, 5, or 10s starting at any point.

7.  TSW explain story problems with manipulatives or graphic representations.

Introduced and Practiced Outcomes:

1.  The Student Will engage in mathematical thinking skills and problem solving.

2.  TSW create a sequence of numbers to 100 counting by 3, 4, or 9s starting at any point.

3.  TSW practice the addition family facts.

4.  TSW practice counting by 10s and 20s, recognizing it is adding zeroes to single digit numbers

Key Terms and Concepts:

Using daily routines shall provide the student a chance to practice real life problem solving skills.

Cross Curricular Activities:

Success Orientations:

·  Focus on Group Interaction

Science:

·  Use calendar to group days by weather rule and, count by 2, 5, and 10s

Reading/Language Arts:

·  Ask students to read the multiplication problem. Show them how to read the multiplication symbol as "rows of." For example, they will read the problem 4 x 8 as "four rows of eight."

·  write multiplication problems illustrating understanding.
