All about me / This theme focuses on our children and their personal history and lives. We have a special picture gallery with photographs of the children as babies. We look at toys’ now and then’ and create simple time lines of the children’s lives. We make portraits of our faces. Invite health professionals to visit, school nurse, family members i.e. grandparents. Our role-play for this topic could be a baby clinic. Small world homes. Talk about families.
People who help us / This theme focuses on learning about the people in our community who help us in different ways. Our role play for this topic is a fire station/ police station / doctors. We can visit locations in our community including bakers shop, doctors etc... explore local community. We can invite visitors including the fire service with engine or teddy rescue. Share story – emergency.
Me and my senses / This theme focuses on our children and their five senses. We talk about healthy lifestyles ‘I can’. We send home a plastic bag and cotton wool for families to bring a smell. We use resources to make instruments to explore sounds. Invite health professionals to visit, school nurse. Our role-play for this topic could be an optician.
Sparkling bright / This theme celebrates birthdays and Christmas. It helps children to understand the celebrations of Diwali . We celebrate Christmas traditions at home and at school. Our role play is the home corner decorated for Christmas. Office area Post office/ Santa’s workshop with Christmas cards, gift labels, letters to Santa etc for children to write. Invite our local vicar in addition to assembly or walk to the church.
Building on up / This theme focuses on buildings This theme looks at traditional stories such as the Three Little Pigs and Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have the Three pig’s houses / tool shop as our role-play. We also construct their houses in design technology. We talk about our home where we live and who lives in our house. We explore, compare and contrast our local area and talk about our environment.
Prints, paws and patterns / This theme has a focus on animals. We read ‘Rumble in the Jungle by Giles Andreas, ‘Walking Through the Jungle’. Our role play for this is a jungle and small world is wild animals. Painting jungle animals and using different media for the pattern and prints. We have make animal masks and create movements like animals.
Infinity and Beyond / This theme focuses on learning about space. We can share rhymes and stories with space/alien themes and characters. Small world rocket, moon landing, alien planet. Our role-play for this topic can be space rocket controls, astronaut and alien dress up. Space adventures ‘Whatever Next ‘Jill Murphy. Space resources are used in small world. We explore mirrors and shiny resources.
Animals / This theme focuses on learning about animals. We can share rhymes and stories with animal characters. Invite library service. Small world farm, We have living eggs. Our role-play for this topic can be vets, farm shop. Invite companies such as Pets @ home to visit. Invite families to bring their own small pets. Introduce a class pet to care for.
Book and stories - Castles / We share many traditional tales. Build box castles, use ICT to draw and label castles. Create a Fairy tale writing area. We draw pen drawings of castle characters and use shiny collage on them. Children make crowns. We have a role play castle, a small world castle. Play castles for small world. We use different media to create dragon pictures.Stories shared – traditional tales, Into the Castle, who wants a dragon.
Commotion in the ocean / This theme helps the children to learn about life under and on the sea, including stories and poems such as Rainbow Fish and Commotion in the Ocean and Pirate Pete. Our role play for this topic is a pirate ship and a treasure island, seaside play. Rockpool, beach scenes and pirates for small world.
On the move / This theme is linked to vehicles and journeys. We identify different modes of transport. We find out about places around the world and compare to our local environment. Our role-play for this topic is a bus /train stations, travel agents. Sing wheels on the bus. Stories shared – The Train Ride, the world came to us today.
@ the Bottom of the Garden / This theme provides the opportunity to explore the outdoors, in particular our minibeast area and grow it patch. We watch caterpillars turn into butterflies and find out about life cycles. Children enjoy stories such as Jasper’s Beanstalk, The hungry Caterpillar. We can use junk resources to make 3d mini beasts. Our writing are is themed with labelling minibeasts, little information books. UW explore living things similarities and differences
