Evidence to Support Achievement of Student Learning

Locate summary descriptions of data for all assessments in your program’s plan in the chart below. Data should be quantitative wherever possible.

Analysis and Program Change

Based upon the evidence, what are the strengths and weaknesses of the program in terms of accomplishing student learning?

The strengths of the MPH program that support student learning include having faculty with expertise in the program’s concentration; requiring students to take a comprehensive examination of the core concepts of public health as deemed by the Council on Education for Public Health; and requiring students to engage in a field practicum experience and write a capstone paper or thesis. The weaknesses of the MPH program include a lack of procedure for matching students with faculty as Practicum Advisors. Additionally, students have expressed program weaknesses such as involvement in research studies, employment assistance, and access to public health certifications.

What specific actions have been identified for discussion to make needed improvements?

The MPH faculty have identified the problems that are caused by the lack of procedure for matching students and faculty for the Practicum. The faculty are discussing how the remaining program weaknesses impact retention and student satisfaction.

What change/s will be implemented to make improvements?

The MPH faculty have determined that the MPH program student manual needs to be revised to indicate a procedure and policy for matching students with Practicum Advisors. Additionally, faculty are discussing and identifying 1) research opportunities for students to get involved in and 2) certifications, that can be obtained in collaboration with other programs at CSU, useful in public health such as Geographic Information Systems.

Assessment as a Departmental Priority

Document assessment communication annually by providing minutes of departmental/program discussions of assessment.

The MPH faculty have discussed in faculty meetings the major obstacles impacting the retention and graduation rates of MPH students. Issues directly related to these topics have been documented in faculty meeting minutes and are discussed regularly.

Publicizing Student Learning

What are the current mechanisms for publicizing assessment?

Currently, the assessment reports are publicized on the department’s website (
