Everyone working in a healthcare environment where there is close interaction with patients need to understand the importance of proper hygiene, MRSA screening, isolation precaution and other precautions seen in this program.

This program is also suitable for Public Access television distribution.

c. Program Description: Last year, Medicare, the federal health program for the elderly and disabled, announced that it will stop paying hospitals to treat several types of hospital infections that are preventable and therefore should “never” happen. Hospitals will be barred from billing patients for what Medicare doesn’t pay. Even the Joint Commission, which is responsible for accrediting most of the nation’s hospitals, recently announced that it will make hospital hygiene and infection prevention a focus of future inspections. These are major changes that will eventually save lives, BUT how does a hospital go about preventing hospital acquired infections (HAIs)? What are the best practices? Is this a technology issue or a management issue? Has any hospital been successful eliminating HAIs? Is there anyone we can learn from?

The answer to these questions is YES! The Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS) worked directly with Mission Critical to co-produce a 30 min educational program documenting their successful MRSA PREVENTION PROGRAM. Mission Critical’s camera crews filmed demonstrations and interviews on location with senior VAPHS personnel to deliver the successful VA MRSA Prevention bundle. This bundle includes Process, Culture Change, Measurement and expert insight into the Roles and Responsibilities of their MRSA program leadership. This program is divided into 5 chapters:

1.  Surrounded by Experts Supported by Leadership

2.  How the Culture Transformed & Examples of Transformation

3.  Patient Care

4.  The Need for Data

5.  Impact

The VA shares their lessons learned in preventing MRSA by using the TPS and Positive Deviance models. Positive Deviance was pivotal to controlling costs and promoting ownership of the MRSA problem and solutions by staff and patients and to foster a cultural transformation from within to combat the prevalence of MRSA HAI at the VAPHS.

Our healthcare providers need to be able to learn best practices from successful facilities such as VAPHS. Mission Critical’s Infection Control series is providing a national platform to communicate excellence and open avenues of discussion between hospitals nationwide.

d. Program Objectives: To drive awareness to every healthcare worker that everyone in the healthcare facility, even the patients, NEED TO GET INVLOVED in MRSA prevention practices. The continuing objectives for Mission Critical TV is to deliver timely information to our Healthcare and Public Health Officials and private sector viewers about reducing MRSA and other HAIs.

Learning Objectives:

1.  Define “HAIs”, “VRE”, “MRSA”

2.  Introduce infection control Best Practice and the MRSA Prevention bundles

3.  Establish the need to collect HAI data to enable a facility to know how many MRSA, C. diff and other HAI patients the facility is treating and which patients need isolation precautions and how much these HAI’s are costing their facility.

4.  Examine the costs related to the lack of empowerment and leadership support.

5.  Demonstrate simple solutions to reduce MRSA and other HAIs.

6.  Introduce Positive Deviance.

7.  Demonstrate the need for every facility to act now and do what they can to eliminate MRSA from their facility.
