Friends or Foes? - Motivating People in a Small Team

Motivating a small team is probably the biggest test of a project manager’s people management skills. On the one hand close relationship with open and direct communication in a team is thought to be the foundation of good team performance. On the other hand when people get too close stern words or disciplines are hard to take, resulting in a managerial dilemma. Where should a project manager draw the line?

There is also the age-old challenge of motivating and inspiring people in a smaller team which is more likely to work in smaller project, or just a portion of a bigger project.

We don’t have the answer.But we believe through the exchange of ideas and experience sharing under the guidance of our lead contributor who has immense experience in managing small team, we all can have some insights.

Jackson Ng is the COO and co-founder of TechNet (Hong Kong) Ltd., a cloud solutions developer and service provider since 2011. He spent more than twenty years in practicing client management, solutions sales, and technology development in the IT sector (IBM, Sybase, and ASL) and semiconductor industry (Motorola) . He was the member of innovative design team in Motorola Semiconductor launching the first writing screen of Instant Dictation (快譯通).

Jackson has been serving his church for more than twenty years. He is church deacon, chairman of Sacred Music Committee, choir member and church conductor .

He loves developing people in his professional life, and wine, cooking, reading, marathon and spiritual development in his personal life.
