SUMMARY Under the direction of the school principal or assigned supervisor, oversee the cleaning of a school or division administration facility; participate in the cleaning and maintenance of offices and schools; train and provide work direction to assigned staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Plan, organize and schedule custodial services at the school site and perform or lead the work of others in performing a variety of custodial tasks.
  • Train and provide work direction to assigned staff; assist in the selection, training and evaluation of regular staff and student assistants.
  • Order, receive, store and distribute instructional and custodial supplies and materials.
  • Communicate with staff and others to schedule and coordinate the use of facilities; maintain related records.
  • Perform a variety of routine, nontechnical repair and maintenance tasks, such as replacing lighting fixtures, repair furniture and adjusting shades or blinds.
  • Perform periodic inspections and report on the condition of the assigned facilities.
  • Assure proper security of assigned plant; lock and unlock doors and gates; set alarms; perform grounds and building inspections for damage and vandalism as directed; raise and lower flags.
  • Prepare and maintain related records and reports, including work orders, supply orders, area use requests and other records as required.
  • Coordinate the use of school facilities by community organizations and outside groups; plan and coordinate custodial work as necessary to prepare facilities for special events.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by School Administrator.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Modern cleaning methods and techniques of cleaning and preserving floors, walls and fixtures.
  • Cleaning materials, disinfectants and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Operation of space heaters, door closures, combination locks and other mechanical equipment commonly found in public schools.
  • Principles of training and providing work direction.

ABILITY TO:

  • Train and provide work direction to others.
  • Estimate quantity and types of supplies needed.
  • Use mechanical tools and perform minor nontechnical repairs.
  • Use common electrical cleaning equipment skillfully and safely.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Maintain basic records and prepare forms and reports.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Valid Virginia driver's license
