SUMMARY INFORMATION

Post: consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in upper limb surgery

Base: glasgow royal Infirmary

We are seeking to recruit a substantive Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in upper limb surgery to start from February 2014. The post holder will be expected to support the established shoulder, elbow and wrist/hand surgical colleagues. Additionally, it is likely to be necessary to undertake lower limb surgery, especially arthroplasty, as required to respond to waiting list pressures.

With its central location, Glasgow Royal Infirmary attracts a significant volume of complex tertiary referrals in shoulder/elbow problems from around the region. This is further enhanced by a large rheumatology unit which takes patients from the whole of West of Scotland. There are currently 4 substantive consultant surgeons (including this post) responsible for delivering the upper limb service in addition to a team of ESP physiotherapists and Nurses. The hand surgery on-call is shared with the plastic surgeons.

The orthopaedic unit at Glasgow Royal Infirmary prides itself on its research output with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals each year, as well as many podium presentations and posters at national and international meetings. There is a full time research manager who facilitates research and audit in the department. Excellent facilities also exist for basic science research in collaboration with the Anatomy Department at GlasgowUniversity and the Bioengineering Departments at Glasgow Caledonian and StrathclydeUniversities.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the general trauma on-call rota at Consultant level.

It should also be noted that whilst this post is advertised for and will commence at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Greater Glasgow & Clyde is undergoing significant and exciting change with the completion of a new build hospital at the Southern General Site. The move should start to take place in May 2015. There will be a review of all services prior to the opening of the new hospital that may affect all sites and staff within GG&C which could mean working from a different site/sites.
