PHYSICAL EDUCATION- Required Classes

POLICIES/ PROCEDURES and STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

General Requirements

1.  1-1/2 credits of physical education required to meet graduation standard.

2.  Physical education grades are included in GPA, honor roll, and class rank.

3.  Students are required to enroll in .5 credit in grades 9, 10, and 11.

4.  Students are NOT allowed to enroll in two physical education classes in one term for any reason.

5.  ***Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors will choose a block of units and will remain with the same instructor for the duration of the term. Students may not duplicate blocks.

Grading Procedures

1.  Grading Scale: Each student is provided a variety of team and individual units during the term. All Students will participate in a swim and lifetime fitness unit each term.

2.  All units are based on 20 points per day with the following grading scale:

A = 100-92% B = 91-83% C = 82-74% F = 73-0%

***The Physical Education Department does NOT issue a “D”. It is understood that a student must show proficiency to receive credit towards the graduation requirement.

2. Method of Evaluation:

Daily Participation & Lab Practical / Hellison’s Developmental Levels / 60%
Material Theory - Unit Logging / Charting / Various Other Written Assessments / 10%
F.I.T.T. Grade – Pacer Tests and Pre/Post Fitness Testing / 15%
Final Exam / 15%

The total grade will include assessment components such as:

-Skill components -Tests (written or verbal) -Final Exam -Daily Knowledge Comprehension

-Charting or logging - Warm-ups & Strength Components -FITT Baseline & Improvement

Point System (based The Social Responsibility Model-- Don Hellison's 1985)

1. Warm-ups, Skill Assessments, Application of Lesson, etc - 20 points per day

§  Level IV - Helping another student or teacher – assuming own needs are reached (+1 bonus point)

§  Level III - Focused on all aspects of the task (earn all points)

§  Level II - Focus on task needs teacher attention (loss of points)

§  Level I - Focus is completely off task.

o  (significant loss of points and parental/guardian involvement needed)

§  Level 0 - Focus is completely off task and disrespect is shown to teacher and or other students.

o  (Major Intervention and administrative discipline action taken)

Physical Education Final Exam (15%): All required courses must complete an exam to receive credit toward graduation.

There will be a final exam for all levels of Physical Education. The content will include activities that the student has participated in throughout the term. The student is responsible for taking notes, keeping handouts or quizzes, etc. It is important that the student recognizes the responsibility for material given in class by their instructor through various methods such as verbal, demonstration, written, video, etc. Physical Education offers a great opportunity to learn and assess ideas through a variety of methods. We hope that this will be a positive learning experience that they can use in the future for themselves, their friends and their families.

Writing Utensil – Pen /Pencil needed daily!!! Clipboards as needed

Heart Monitor Personal Elastic Strap *Towel

($6.00-distributed the first week of class via your teacher) *=both towel and lock is a $6 charge if NOT returned at the end of the term.

Make-up Work:

1.  The physical education department will have make-ups during the resource time at the end of the school day.

2.  Students must sign-up with the teacher to receive individual attention. The sign-up sheet will have due dates.

3.  Make-ups must be completed within 1 week of the missed material.

Time Schedule/Consequences:

1.  Tardy, Out of uniform, Inappropriate language, Safety Issues

(Any jewelry, gum, climbing bleachers, jumping balcony to bleachers, etc.), non-designated area(s)

Note: All detentions must be served the same day during your lunch period (Report to the Gym).

For those students that have 4th period class, detentions will be served immediately at 2:40 the same day.

If detentions are not served within 24 hours a phone call to the parent/guardian will be made home. The detention doubles in time and an office referral will be issued.

***Note: A student who prohibits the education of others by being disruptive or a safety hazard will possibly be removed and placed into another block of units. ***

Responsible Use of Personal Music is presumed.

Music is allowed during Lifetime Fitness Units/Body Conditioning Units. Teachers will provide details.

Medical Excuse Policy:

1.  Single day request to be excused from class should be made by the student with their teacher.

The teacher will send the student to the school nurse if the condition warrants. If a student feels ill, but not enough to go home, the student will be asked to dress in uniform and will moderate their activity level. (No student will remain in street clothes in physical education class.)

2.  When a medical occurs the Medical Action Plan will go into effect. This plan notifies the students Guidance Counselor, Assistant Principal, School Nurse and Parent/Guardian of the guidelines to follow for credit completion.

3.  If the medical excuse is for a period of time less than 10 school days, a short-term Action Plan will be implemented

4.  Students may not participate in intramural or interscholastic athletic events if medically excused from Physical Education.

5.  A physician must issue a medical. It must include the following:

a.  Specific illness or injury and specific activities that the student is ALLOWED to participate in.

b.  Date to return to activity.

6.  Students protected under Section 504. Certain health and/or medical conditions may require the district to determine whether a child is eligible for specialized physical education under a provision of the law titled Section 504. To be protected under section 504, a student must be determined to: have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Section 504 requires that South Milwaukee School District provide a free appropriate public education to qualified students in their jurisdictions who have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more life activity. After a referral for Section 504 eligibility is made, an evaluation is conducted. Students qualifying for Section 504 would then have an accommodation plan developed detailing the child’s educational program including physical education.

Gym Uniforms

1.  Required for physical education for safety and hygiene purposes.

2.  Shirt and shorts with student’s name on it (Last Name, First Initial or Name).

3.  Current cost is $18-$22 at Sunrise Clothiers (downtown South Milwaukee-916 Milwaukee Ave.) or school store (ORBIT off Heritage Hall). Students are allowed to wear the traditional outfit or the new design.

4.  A second uniform (or workout clothing in school colors) is recommended if laundry is an issue at home (FOR EMERGENCY SITUATIONS ONLY-temporary fix). No student will be allowed to remain in street clothes during class. Students without workout attire will asked to phone an individual and have items delivered so that he/she can be successful. SEE DISCIPLINE MATRIX FOR ADDITIONAL ACTION.

5.  Appropriate socks and gym shoes fully laced and tied.

6.  Swim units students should bring their own suits. Contact your teacher if you need assistance. Sun Bathing Suits are not acceptable.

7.  Students are allowed to use sweat pants/sweat shirts for Outdoor Units when cold weather is an issue.

8.  During the Outdoor Activities (winter) Unit (10-11-12th grade) students must have a hat to protect the ears and gloves/mittens for their hands. Each student must be dressed appropriately for outdoor activity.

Gym Locks & Towels

1.  Locks are provided for each student via the physical education department. No student may use their own lock on school lockers or the personal lock will be cut-off and destroyed.

2.  If the lock is lost, the replacement cost is $6.00. All locks are to be returned at the end of the term.

3.  Personal items must be locked. The school/instructors are not responsible for lost/stolen articles.

4.  Each student will be issued one towel at the start of the term. Student may return a soiled towel to receive a clean towel as needed.

5.  Student must return a PE towel at the end of the term or the student will be charged $6.00 for replacement costs.

Heart Monitor Personal Elastic Strap

1.  Each student will need a Polar Heart Rate Monitor Personal Strap.

2.  Straps can be purchased the first week of the term. Straps are $6.00. Bring your old one, a borrowed one from a friend or $6.00.

3.  Students that do not have a strap for their personal use will be billed. Financial arrangements can be made.

Locker Room Guidelines and Procedure

1.  Gym lockers are provided for each student to store their workout attire. Each student is required and responsible for his or her assigned locker only! Students should report to the locker room when arriving for his/her scheduled class.

2.  Five-foot long lockers are to be used by students only during scheduled gym class to store students’ street clothes and valuables. The locker should be secured with the school issued lock. Do not leave any personal items unattended. Once dressed, students should report to the gymnasium.

3.  The locker room will be locked three minutes after the tardy bell. Theft is a major issue and this is a method to deter this behavior. STUDENTS ARE STILL ADVISED TO LOCK ALL BELONGINGS.

v  The Physical Education Department is not responsible for lost or stolen items!

4.  Cleaning out of lockers must be completed by the last day of class. Personal belongings left will be placed into our loan center.

5.  Showering after activity is expected and towels will be provided, for some activities. Students should plan to bring their own towel if the one provided is not enough. One towel per student.

Food in Gym or Locker Room

1.  No food or drink is allowed in the physical education area at any time.

2.  GUM CHEWING IS NOT ALLOWED (safety and a clean area is the major concern).

Eye Glasses/Jewelry

1.  Glasses should be of the shatterproof variety. SMHS is not responsible for broken glasses.

2.  It is mandatory to remove jewelry for the safety of all!

3.  No taping of jewelry ***(see Student Handbook for details)***

Injuries

1.  All injuries should be reported to the instructor in charge.

2.  An accident report will be filled out on the day of the injury.

Swimming Pool

1.  All students must take a full shower before entering the pool. (Helps with body oils; closes pores to the pools chemicals, etc.)

2.  If you have scabs or open sores, check with your instructor regarding participation. Bandages or band-aids are not allowed due to possible clogging of the filter.

3.  One towel will be provided for showers after each period.

4.  Students must have a medical if swimming is not possible!

5.  A note from a guardian is required for any student not able to participate due to special circumstances on the day of exclusion. Also on the note, the guardian should specify when the class will be made up is expected.

***If a note is missing on the day of exclusion, a loss of 20 points will occur and the student will not be granted an opportunity for a makeup.

6.  Your teacher will review safety guidelines the first day of your swim unit. All students must be present or complete a check sheet prior to entering the pool. Each student will be given a swim test. This swim test is very basic and is based on your swim ability. The swim test provides a safe environment for everyone.

Safety Procedures for Indoor Physical Education

1.  Stay off the bleachers – no climbing, hanging, leaping from balcony to bleachers (visa versa) and no leaning on balcony railings.

2.  Refrain from jumping, touching, hanging, etc. on the basketball rims, backboards or nets.

3.  Please walk around the outside of the Volleyball nets, Badminton nets, etc.

4.  Stay in your assigned area/class.

5.  Stay active the entire time! Please no sitting or standing around.

6.  Please watch for extra basketballs, volleyballs, soccer balls, etc. that may enter into your court.

Nicely return them to the proper area. Do not throw or hit them back aggressively!

7.  Use proper game, skill and equipment procedures. Tripping, pushing, blocking, kicking the ball or an individual, hitting with or without equipment, etc. is PROHIBITED!

8.  Please do not remove equipment from the storage room or physical education offices without permission from the instructor.

Safety Procedures for Outside Physical Education

1.  Avoid any construction areas and act safely at all times.

2.  Walk around the cars in the parking lot.

3.  When crossing the city streets use extra caution at all times. Cross at marked crosswalks and always proceed with caution. SAFETY is the PRIORITY.

4.  Walk around the tennis nets. Please do not jump or step over the tennis nets. Also do not sit or lean on the tennis nets.

5.  Stay off the fences. Please no climbing, shaking, etc.

6.  Stay active the entire time! Please no sitting or standing around.

7.  Please watch for extra tennis balls, soccer balls, etc. that may enter into your court.

Nicely return them to the proper area. Do not throw or hit them back aggressively!

8.  Use proper game, skill and equipment procedures.

9.  Please do not remove equipment for the storage cabinet without permission from the instructor.
