8TH Grade Physical Education: Intermediate Activities
Mr. Druce
Welcome to Physical Education. My name is Mr. Druce and I will be teaching your class this semester. I am very excited to be here and look forward to getting to know each one of you!
OVERVIEW
The Physical Education Program is designed to develop the mental, emotional, physical, and social aspects of living; necessary for a happy and productive life. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of team and individual sports, which include skills, rules, and game strategy, as well physical fitness. Students will participate in physical activities that will enable them to become physically fit and maintain a physically active, healthy lifestyle. Students will learn the health-related benefits of regular physical activity and develop an understanding of how physical activities provide lifelong opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-confidence and social interaction.
In this class students will practice skills and begin to participate in games with more complex playing environments. Cooperative and traditional sports activities are included in the class. It will incorporate more in-depth instruction and application of physical fitness. Fitness for life concepts will be introduced and students will develop skills that will help them live healthy lifestyles.
Physical Education Core Standards
Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity.
Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.
Standard 6: Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.
Rules and Expectations
We abide by all rules and guidelines found in the Summit Academy Jr. High Student Agenda.
Students will dress appropriately in uniform daily.
Students must always be active participants and on task.
Five minutes after the bell, and five minutes at the end of class will be given for changing.
Use the equipment properly and as instructed. Student is liable for damaged or lost equipment.
Anytime there is an injury, notify the teacher immediately.
At the end of class students must remain in the gym until the bell rings.Those leaving early will receive adisciplinary referral and receive point deductions from their grade.
Obscene language, gestures, harassment, bullying, or disrespect is unacceptable and will receive disciplinary action.
All bodily accessories must be removed before attendance is taken. This includes watches, earrings, necklaces, and rings.
Keep hands, feet, and other items to yourself.
Students must ask for permission before leaving gym. This includes requests for the restroom and drinking fountain.
You will lose your daily participation points for not dressing, chewing gum, possessing a cell phone, iPod, or any other electronic device, class disruptions, cursing, being of task and not abiding by the Summit Academy Agenda Rules.
Work is done in class; therefore students must be in class to receive credit.
Proper Dress for Class
- A complete change of athletic clothing must be worn. Athletic shorts must be four inches above the knee or longer. Sweatpants or athletic pants may be worn. Shirts must have sleeves, and when your arms are raised you midriff should not be showing. Write you first and last name in large letters on the back of your shirt in permanent marker. You will lose your dress points if your shirt does not have both your first and last name. Socks and laced-up, non-marking sneakers are also required.
- Students are required to change out every day, no exceptions. If a student forgets their P.E. attire, they are still required to participate in class, but participation points will be taken away. Make sure you come prepared everyday for class.
- Classes will be held outdoors as much as possible in the fall and spring. Be prepared daily with a jacket, sweatshirt and/or sweatpants.
Locker Room
- Students are not given a specific P.E. locker. They are free to put clothes in a locker during class, but must empty out the locker by the end of class. If a student wishes to bring a personal lock to keep items safe during class, they are responsible for their own lock and remembering the combination.
- Items left in lockers are turned into the lost and found.
- Once you leave the locker room to come to class you will not be able to go back in. That means each student needs to make sure they have everything they need when they come out into the gym. Each time a student needs to go back into the locker room, points will be deducted.
Students are to conduct themselves in a mature and respectful manner in the locker room. Horseplay, screaming, throwing things, hiding others belongings, etc… will not be tolerated in the locker room.No taunting, teasing, harassment, sexual harassment, vulgarity, or vandalism will be tolerated. If you feel you are the victim of the above behaviors, inform me immediately.
Personal Hygiene
- Please bring home your PE clothes weekly to be washed.
- Showers are not available at Summit Academy Jr. High.
- You may bring a deodorant stick to PE class; however no sprays of any kind should be in the locker room due to allergies and asthma.
Attendance and Participation
- A student well enough to be in school is generally well enough to be participating in class. Any exception to this will be handled on an individual basis. Students will be required to dress everyday without exception.
- A note from a parent is required to excuse a student due to injury or illness. It will be accepted for a maximum of three consecutive days. To be excused longer than three days, a doctor’s note is required.
- Summit Academy allows three absences, excused or not excused to be made up. Unit assignments will need to be made up. After the third absence, however, the student will get a zero for unit assignments and any other assignments or assessments, and will not be allowed to make it up.
Make Ups
- Students may make up, at their request and at the teacher’s discretion,excused absences. It is up to the student to know if he/she needs to make up days.
- The student will have five days from the day of the absence to turn in their P.E. make-up assignment.
- The student can complete one of the worksheets provided on the class website in order to gain points back that were lost from the absence.
Grading
Points will be earned for proper dress, class participation, attitude, behavior, and completion of fitness for life worksheets. There will be written tests and assignments on the fitness for life concepts and sports units.
Categories
Participation: Each day is worth 10 points
- Properly dressed in P.E. attire. (5 points)
- Actively participates in activity, controls behavior as to not disrupt class instruction or interfere with others. Shows good sportsmanship (positive attitude and respectful). (5 Points)
In Class Work: Fitness for life worksheets
Written tests: Tests will cover fitness for life principles as well as sports units.
Cardiovascular and Fitness Tests: Students will be assessed using the FITNESSGRAM.
The assessment items are as follows:
Aerobic Capacity
- One-mile run
Muscular Strength, Endurance, and Flexibility
- Abdominal strength and endurance (curl-up)
- Trunk extensor strength and endurance (trunk lift)
- Upper body strength and endurance (push-up and flexed arm hang)
- Flexibility (sit-and-reach and shoulder stretch)
Grades for fitness tests will be given on personal improvement. Students are strongly encouraged to be active outside of class in order to continue improving their physical fitness.
Please talk to me if you know you will be gone before you are absent. Students are responsible for finding out about what was missed or covered in class.
Grades are determined by total over-all points accumulated, divided by total points possible.
The grade breakdown is as follows:
100-94%...A 83-80%...B- 69-67%...D+
93-90%...A- 79-77%...C+ 66-64%...D
89-87%...B+ 76-74%...C 63-60%...D-
86-84%...B 73-70%...C- 59% or less...F
Physical education class provides an environment for your student to learn healthy living concepts and to discover a variety of ways to be physically active now and for the rest of his or her life. I am passionate about these healthy living principles and hope to give your student a love for physical activity and a desire to take care of himself/herself.
