Helping Those Less Fortunate
It’s time for the January Community Service meeting once again! For those of you who are new to the guild, we have chosen January as the perfect month to have this “in house” project because of the uncertain weather.
This is a good time to come and experience a kind of old fashion quilting bee. It gives us all a chance to sit and chat while keeping our hands busy for a good cause.
Members can bring supplies for the community quilts (cutting mats, rotary blades, rulers, scissors, needles and thread).
I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who contributed to the community project this past year. Many hands make light work. Bless all of you during this holiday season, and I look forward to completing many quilts in the new year.

A Note from the President
I have a new e-mail address shown at the end of this note. If you’ve sent any messages to my old address, and I haven’t responded to them, that’s the reason.
It is astonishing to me that a whole new year has begun. May this year go as well and quickly as the last! I thank every one of you who has helped the guild prosper and be a welcoming place for quilters to share their skills and passion for quilting.
Our focus until May will be the quilt show. Every other year we take on this most crucial fundraiser for our guild. We need every member’s contributions of quilts to hang as well as participation in organizing and conducting the actual event.
I can’t stress enough that all skill levels and that all types of quilts from small to large, from simple to complex, from traditional to art quilts—all are welcome. This is not a time to be shy and think yours aren’t good enough.
Variety is great! Ordinary people who walk through the quilt show don’t understand technique or count stitches per inch. They just like what they like and appreciate our efforts.

Quilt Show 2008 at LakeMetroparks Farmpark
Show is held at Lake Metroparks Farmpark, 8800 Chardon Rd., Kirtland, Oh 44094. Admission is $6; seniors 60+ $4. 17th Annual Indiana Heritage Quilt Show
Show held at BloomingtonConvention Center, 3rd St. and College Ave. Admission is $6 per day; $12 for all three days. 20th Rotary Antique Quilt Show
Show entitled “Can’t Have Too Many Baskets” is held at the CivicCenter, 2701 Park Ave., Paducah, Ky. For quilt collectors, basket quilts provide a wonderful opportunity to search for the most unusual types. In this collection you will see not only a great variety of styles, colors, and interpretations, but you will also see the differences between individual collectors. Admission is $5. MVQG 2008 Membership Show
The more than 200 members of the MiamiValley Quilters’ Guild present their most recent works in this biennial show which is one of the largest regional shows in Ohio. Our members range from novices to professional quilters, designers, and lecturers. A boutique of member made items provides an opportunity to enhance your décor or add to your collection and a raffle quilt made by members will be awarded at the conclusion of the show on Saturday. State, regional, and local vendors provide a wide variety of quilts and quilt-related items – from fabric and notions to the latest in home sewing machines and professional quality long-arm machines. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The show is at the MontgomeryCounty Fairgrounds Coliseum, South Main Street, Dayton, Ohio, USA Admission: $5.00

39th Annual NQG Quilt Show
Show is held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The show will feature exhibits, classes, lectures, an extensive vendor mall and special events. The 400+ competition quilts will be joined by a special theme exhibit of Rose Quilts, selected quilts from Sacred Threads: 2007, a fascinating exhibit of Vintage Kit Quilts from the collection of noted quilt historian Xenia Cord, an exhibit called Contemporary Colorations: The Wow Factor and a sampling of wonderful NQA Chapter Challenge Quilts.Class information brochures will be available to all current members of NQA in the winter issue of The Quilting Quarterly. Registration information will be posted on their website on or about January 2, 2008. Advance registration is available for all volunteers who worked two shifts during the 38th Annual Show in 2007.
Pointers & Tips for Quilting
Interesting Shapes: If you want an unusual heart shape or a square shape check out the local scrapbooking shop. They have some interesting shapes that would be great for quilting.
Secret Pocket: When making quilts for children (or friends) add a secret pocket with a little love note in it...only you and the recipient will know where it is if you disguise it well. This is lovely for grandchildren, you can add a new note each time you visit them.
Resharpen Rotary Blades: To resharpen your rotary cutters, fold up a piece of silver foil so that you have several layers; then just cut through it several times and your cutter will be resharpened.
Useful CDs: Save those flat tins that the new AOL CDs come in. You can use them to store your plastic templates.! The CD itself is just the right size to make a yo-yo pattern and the tin will hold other templates! Don’t like the cover? Take a swatch of your favorite fabric and glue to the top. Be sure to label it with the contents!
Tilting Machine: Use 2 door stops to raise the back of your machine so that the machine is tilted toward you. Relieves back strain and it only costs about 39 cents at the hardware store.
Bias Cuts: Applying spray starch to fabric before cutting bias cuts will help keep fabric from stretching and distorting.
Wrapping Paper Tubes: Save your empty cardboard tubes from Christmas wrapping paper and roll your quilts onto the tubes to store them. The quilts will not wrinkle on the closet shelf.
Paper Towel Tubes: Use paper towel tubes for storing leftover pieces of bindings. It keeps then nice and flat and there is no need to re-iron.
Sandwiching Quilt: When you get ready to sandwich your quilt, it helps to use a large yardstick to smooth out the wrinkles in the batting. It only takes a few strokes of the yardstick to get a smooth laying batting, the yardstick acts as an extended long arm and works like a charm. Make sure your yardstick is smooth so that it can glide over the batting easily.
Position in Front of Machine: Sit directly in front of your line of sewing when sewing by machine. It will help to make your seams straight as an arrow. If you sit even a bit to one side or another, your line of stitching will go just that little bit with you.
Bobbin Container: You know those little tubes that contain miniature M&Ms? They’re just the size to hold bobbins. It will hold five bobbins, and they don’t unravel in your sewing box.
Detergent Boxes: Store your quilting magazines in empty detergent boxes. They are sturdy, have handles and smell good. They can be covered with contact paper or spray adhesive and fabric.
