Sharing Heritage: Bristol Charity Youth Education Service celebrates £6,800 Heritage Lottery Fund grant

Bristol Charity, the Youth Education Service wins Heritage Lottery Fund support

Today, the Youth Education Service (YES) has receivedis celebrating the award of £6,800 from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) Sharing Heritage scheme for an exciting project, YES we did! This oral history project will research and document the history of Bristol ROSLA Project and the Youth Education Service through the voices of past and present users of the service, volunteers and staff.

Sharing Heritage is a funding programme recently developed to help people across the UK explore, conserve and share all aspects of the history and character of their local area.

The project will follow up young people and adults who have been involved with YES, and earlier with the Bristol ROSLA Project, since its beginning in 1972. These are all people who have faced barriers to progression in learning and life. YES will find out and document how they have overcome these barriers (or what obstacles/issues remain for them). The project will be supported by MShed Bristol where relevant recordings and records will be deposited. The project will culminate in an event in the summerJune 2014 to mark the thirtieth anniversary of YES.

Volunteers assisting with the research will receive training from the Ooral Hhistory Ssociety and gain new skills.

Youth Education Service works with approximately 200 adults and young people each year, helping them to develop skills in English and Maths and to move into mainstream education and training or employment.

Commenting on the award, Christine Cox, the YES Essential Skills Co-ordinator said: ‘It’s a great opportunity to hear about people’s experiences and celebrate their success.’

Nerys Watts, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund South West said: “Sharing Heritage is a wonderful opportunity for communities to delve into their local heritage and we are delighted to be able to offer this grant so that Youth Education Service can embark on a real journey of discovery. Heritage means such different things to different people, and HLF’s funding offers a wealth of opportunities for groups to explore and celebrate what’s important to them in their area.”
