The Teachers College Columbia University Internship is offered through the Program in Nutrition which has, since it’s founding in 1909, been a leader in promoting health through dietary change by its education, research, and service activities. The DI program is based on the Standards of Education of the American Dietetic Association (ADA). The DI program has a concentration in Nutrition Education while meeting all competencies and learning objectives for an internship program.

Program Mission and Philosophy

The mission of the Teachers College, Columbia University Dietetic Internship (DI) Program is to provide students with a high quality educational and supervised practice experience that will prepare them as competent and effective dietetic practitioners for entry-level positions in dietetics. The philosophy of the DI program is to integrate knowledge and critical thinking skills with service. The focus on service affords the DI Program an opportunity to emphasize professional practice that facilitates modification of personal food choices, food access and food systems. The Program in Nutrition encourages interns to obtain the M.S. degree concurrently with the DI. The combination of the Registered Dietitian (RD) credential and the M.S. integrates knowledge and service and enhances opportunities for graduates to practice in a variety of settings.

Program Goals

The goals of the Teachers College, Columbia University DI Program are to:

1) Prepare interns for entry-level positions in general dietetics.

2) Prepare interns to identify and understand the many roles of the RD within clinical, community, food service and research settings.

3) Prepare graduates to effectively provide nutrition education and counseling to individuals and groups.

Admission Requirements & Selection Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be admitted to the Teachers College, Columbia University Dietetic Internship.

  1. Concurrent or prior acceptance into the Master of Science (Public Health Nutrition, or Applied Physiology & Nutrition, or Nutrition Education). Students must also be matriculants in the MS Program and must take HBSV5013 Strategies for Nutrition Education and Behavior Change; HBSV 5033/5034 Nutrition Care Process and Medical Nutrition Therapy I & II; & HBSV5036 Nutrition Counseling, prior to or concurrently with beginning the Internship.
  2. Verification of completion of ADA Didactic Program in Dietetics requirements.
  3. Completion of DI application through DICAS.
  4. Completion of a computer-matching application through D&D Digital Systems.

The selection criteria used to rank prospective students includes:

1. Quality of the personal statement

2. GPAs for general, nutrition and prerequisite sciences

3. GRE scores (general)

4. Recommendations

5. Honors, awards, activities and previous experience

6. Availability of positions

Program Components and Facilities

The Teachers College, Columbia University Dietetic Internship requires eleven months to complete and students begin the Internship in the fall semester. The 1220 hours of practical experiences include four experientially based modules, accompanied by didactic experiences.

Completion of the Teachers College, Columbia University Dietetic Internship in full equals 10 credit hours. In addition to the 10 credits of tuition (see TC Catalog), the following fees should be anticipated:

Expected Competence

Students satisfactorily completing the Internship should be able to demonstrate the full range of knowledge, skills and competencies in accordance with ADA’s Standards of Education.
