Purpose of the job
To support an identified pupil who has a statement of special educational needs.
To support the class teacher in the teaching and welfare of children to ensure they attain the targets set under their individual educational programmes.

SENCO, TAs, Executive Principal, Principal, Deputy Headteacher, Senior Leadership Team, and outside agencies
Working time
25 hours per week for 39 weeks a year
KEY FUNCTIONS
- To support an identified pupil who has a statement of special educational needs, providing support in class and in withdrawal sessions as required
- To support pupils who require additional help with their learning and behaviour, either one-to-one or in small groups
- To provide support for teachers during lessons
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
The main responsibilities of the post are to:
support a particular pupil who has a statement of special educational needs with his/her learning and behaviour
develop an understanding of the specific needs of pupils taking into account the type of teaching and learning support involved and the requirements of the IEP, ensuring that the advice is carried out
build and maintain successful relationships with pupils, treating them consistently, with respect and consideration
communicate effectively and sensitively with pupils to support their learning
help develop pupils’ study and organisational skills
help keep pupils on task and help to build motivation
promote and support the inclusion of all pupils in the learning activities in which they are involved
use behaviour management strategies in line with the school’s policy and procedures;
give positive support to pupils to enable them to become independent learners within their own ability
assist pupils with physical needs and look after pupils who are sick or upset as required
contact parents/guardians as appropriate by phone or by letter and use of the planner to report on behaviour and progress
have formal and informal meetings with teachers to contribute to planning lessons / activities
take into account the pupil/s’ special needs and ensure their access to the lesson and its content through appropriate clarification, explanations, equipment and materials
undertake learning activities with either individuals or small groups, ensuring their safety and facilitating their physical, emotional and educational development
support the teacher in implementing specific teaching programmes
prepare materials and resources for teachers including photocopying
work on differentiated activities with identified groups
supervise practical tasks
be involved in keeping records and evaluating identified pupils’ progress
ensure the maintenance of a clean, orderly and safe working environment making sure that equipment/resources/materials are set out on time and as per instructions received and used safely to enable pupils meet their learning targets
support the pupils in accessing learning activities as directed by the teacher to enable pupils’ progress towards their targets
be aware of and support differences to ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
provide clerical/admin support (e.g. typing, photocopying, display, collection and recording of money etc.) and undertake basic recording keeping in respect of pupil learning, behaviour management, child protection etc. as directed in order to support the teacher deliver the specific learning programmes set for each child
be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security and confidentiality reporting all concerns to an appropriate person to ensure pupils’ wellbeing
participate in review meetings with parents/carers where needed
provide feedback and homework activities to parents/carers as appropriate
attend and participate in multi-agency meetings contributing to the sharing of information and/or planning in relation to specific pupils
undertake a range of administrative duties relevant to the post
participate as required in relevant training which has been identified by the members of the Senior Leadership Team.
ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times
use ICT effectively to support learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use
work to support the Executive Principal in the maintenance of good discipline and behaviour throughout the school
take part in the duty programme at breaks and lunchtimes
attend and participate in regular meetings and participate in training and other learning activities, as required
participate in and support the appraisal policy
be familiar with and to adhere to relevant parts of the school's Health & Safety policy
promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people you are responsible for or come into contact with
be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to safeguarding, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
be aware of, support and ensure equal opportunities for all
contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school
assist in the development of the SchoolDevelopment Plan and its review mechanism
undertake other tasks as reasonably required by the Executive Principal or Principal
