Course HS Title: / Maintenance and Light Repair / Program:
KCTCS Courses included in HS Title: (Lesson is prepared for course highlighted.)
KCTCS Course No. / KCTCS Course Title
Introduction/Context / This lesson will instruct the student on how to Inspect, adjust, and replace external manual valve shift linkage, transmission range sensor/switch, and park/neutral position switch. Knowledge of these techniques and the skills required to correct problems associated with this task are necessary for a student to acquire if they wish to compete for high paying, high skilled jobs in an Automotive Repair Facility. Entry level technicians need to be able to perform this task to 100% accuracy. Incorrectly performing this task can lead to an automobile accident or create customer satisfaction issues.

Content/Presentation/Demonstration Outline

Instruct students that when servicing an automatic transmission, it may be necessary to adjust the shift linkage along with the transmission range sensor. If these are not adjusted properly, tell them that the vehicle may not start, or it may start in gear, resulting in a major hazard. Let them know that if the linkage is not adjusted properly, the transmission position indicator (PRNDL indicator) will not be set correctly, the customer will not know which gear the vehicle is in, and the backup or reverse lights may not work.
Explain that if the manual valve is not correctly set to the PRNDL indicator, the valve may be placed between two hydraulic passages causing a fluid restriction to the correct hydraulic circuit and possible partial application of the wrong hydraulic circuit. Tell them that this can cause undesirable transmission operation and damage to the transmission. Let them know that if it is far enough out of adjustment, the valve may supply fluid to wrong gear, such as neutral when the PRNDL indicator set to drive.
To inspect, adjust, and replace the manual valve shift cage, transmission range sensor/switch, and park/neutral/position switch, instruct students to do the following:
* Have them look up the proper service procedure in the appropriate service information. Follow the
procedure step by step to inspect and adjust the manual valve and transmission range sensor/neutral
safety switch.
* Tell them to place the gear selector in the park position.
* They should next raise the vehicle on a hoist (if necessary to access the transmission range switch and
manual valve linkage), then disconnect the shift linkage From the transmission.
* Instruct students to place the manual valve in the park position. Tell them the valve should snap into
position.
* Let them know that the shift linkage should fit right onto the manual valve with no pulling on the linkage
or the manual valve.
* If the linkage does not line up, tell them to loosen the adjustment on the shift linkage and adjust the
linkage so that it will install properly on the manual valve.
* They should then tighten the adjustment on the shift linkage.
* Tell them to double check that the PRNDL indicator still indicates the vehicle is in park.
* Instruct students to use an ohmmeter to check that the neutral safety switch/transmission range switch
has continuity on the correct terminals. If not, tell them to loosen the switch and adjust its position. If
continuity is never obtained or is obtained in every gear, they should replace the switch. Let them know
that the vehicle should start only in the park and neutral positions. Tell them to make sure the brake
pedal is firmly applied, and then check that the vehicle starts only in the park and neutral positions.
* Instruct students to run the shifter through all of the gear ranges, checking for proper operation.

Applications/Practice

1 / Refer to content

Evaluation and feedback Prior to Testing or Lab Work

1 / Objective 1. / Formative assessment / Instructor will observe students as they practice the procedure to assure correct procedure and safety practices are being followed. A checklist will be utilized to chart student progress on the task. Questioning techniques will be utilized as necessary to demonstrate student comprehension / depth of knowledge. 2/ Adaptations and/or accommodations for special needs students will be added if required.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT:(Assess student progress with performance criteria.)

1 / Objective 1 / Summative assessment / written test questions on stated objective / depth of knowledge 2/ adaptation and / or accommodations for special needs students will be added if required
IMPACT--Reflection/Analysis of Teaching and Learning: (How did students’ progress in relation to the state objectives? Was the instruction successful? Analyze samples of student work particularly that which is unsatisfactory, for the purpose of planning further instruction.)
REFINEMENT--Lesson Extension and Follow-up: (To be filled in as the lesson is modified during initial planning and/or during the teaching learning process.)
