SE 101 Now Called The APSE Employment Institute
APSE has a commitment to helping people in the field of integrated employment become better at what they do, thereby improving the options for people with significant disabilities as they live and work in their communities. Thus, SE 101 was created and the Institute was first presented at the annual conference in Washington, DC in 2001, and each year thereafter.
The field of integrated employment for people who have disabilities is rapidly changing, and so, too, is APSE. Thus, SE 101 will now become “The APSE Employment Institute.”
The basic concept of the Employment Institute will remain the same. The 2½ day Institute will be filled with ideas, practical applications, and challenges. However, this year, the Institute will take on more of an interactive nature. Participants will be challenged by the faculty to examine concepts, tactics, effective strategies, and proven methods to increase employment for people with disabilities. Problem-solving and negotiation will be key themes of the Institute.
The participants will be challenged to consider real-life situations and work toward practical solutions. A running record of the Institute will be kept and compiled to be disseminated to the whole of the APSE membership via the APSE website and newsletter. This year, the faculty includes Mindy Oppenheim, Rob Hoffman, Joe Lewis, Don Lavin, Laura Owens, and
Bob Niemiec.
Institute participants will not only be taking part in the Institute, but will also have the opportunity to take advantage of the APSE conference experience. They will have the opportunity to attend the keynote addresses, social functions, and exhibits. Most importantly, they will have the chance to meet and exchange ideas with the best people in integrated employment from across the country, as well as other nations. This is a unique opportunity.
The Institute is a way for APSE to “walk the talk” about training and development. We know that this 2½ day event is no substitute for extensive training, but our hope is that you will be inspired to go beyond your learning here and pursue more knowledge and experience. You are the future of integrated employment. We believe it is our responsibility to facilitate growth and development in the field, and this Institute is but the first step. The success of the Institutes has lead to more and expanded training and development opportunities offered by APSE. We look forward to your participation.
