PURPOSE OF JOB:To support the academic success of individual learners by providing pastoral support to young people aged 16 – 24 years old engaged in training, learning and apprenticeship programmes through: regular guidance; tracking and target setting; referral to other support services as appropriate; contributing to learner progression and career plans; contributing to the development of the skills, knowledge and attributes needed for work and life as an effective citizen.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:Willingness to respond flexibly to the changing demands of work through for example, variation in working times and the availability of new technology. There may be a requirement to work evenings and weekends and to travel and between community learning venues.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Be responsible for a number of tutor groups and during weekly tutorial lessons enhance the student’s personal development skills, help to embed the college values and ensure their welfare.
  2. Provide Group and 1:1 support to learners to ensure they remain engaged on their learning programmes.
  3. Set up regular 1:1 monitoring meetings with learners and actively monitor their on course progress.
  4. Enable learners to explore their aspirations, plan their individual learning experience, and reflect on their progress.
  5. Identify barriers to learning and explore potential areas for support
  6. Organise and deliver programmes of individual and group work to help young people engage with and progress in learning and work.
  7. Ensure teaching teams are contributing to and are agreeing to intervention strategies for identified learners.
  8. Monitor attendance and behaviour to ensure learners are actively participating in their full learning programme to ensure they do not become disengaged and, by so doing, are in danger of ‘dropping out’ of their provision.
  9. Provide information, advice and guidance on learning strategies, personal development and progression opportunities.
  10. Use assessment tools to identify young people’s attributes, circumstances and barriers in order to inform their learning and support needs.
  11. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with partners in order to exchange information and observe agreed protocols on referrals.
  12. Track, monitor and record information on progression.
  13. Visit and liaise with opportunity providers, and other agencies to collect information appropriate to support the work with young people.
  14. Network with other professionals/advisers to understand their services and role in supporting young people and to develop appropriate links.
  15. Make use of ICT in undertaking the duties of the role and as required in the course of his/her employment.
  16. Undertake appropriate self-assessment and qualifications to enhance the Learning Mentor role.
  17. Actively promote equality and diversity, recognise and actively challenge stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination ensuring that these principles permeate all working practices.
  18. Work with voluntary, statutory and community agencies and commercial bodies to ensure a coherent approach to overcoming barriers to learning and employment faced by young people and ensure local provision meets the requirements of young people.
  19. Work together with partner organisations to provide innovative and alternative ways of providing services including providing specialist services.
  20. Work with parents, carers and families to support young people to maintain attendance and achieve success
  21. Appropriately involve parents/carers in young person learning
  22. Any other duties appropriate to the level of this post.
