Halloween Safety for Your Dog and Cat Barbara Engerer (Taken from Amazon)

With Halloween right around the corner, it is time to remind ourselves of the important tips to keep the holiday safe for our four-legged companions. It's a fun night for everybody as festive and crazy costumes are everywhere and dogs & cats dress up as people and people dress up as dogs or cats. But it is also one of the most stressful times for some pets. In addition to the stress brought on by the constant parade of weird looking people at the front door, there are other concerns to keep an eye on. With this in mind, here are a couple of tips to keep your dog & cat safe.
1. Maintain your pet's normal feeding, exercise, and sleeping schedule to avoid stress. Stress can give your pet an upset stomach, which can lead to house training accidents.
2. Move your pet to a quiet area of the house, a crate, or draw the safety gate across the hallway, when the trick-or-treaters are coming by. Also, be careful your cat or dog doesn't dart out through the open door as you hand out candy. You should not let him be at the door to greet the kids. Costumes, erratic movements, and loud noise can really upset him and can cause problems ranging from stress to aggression. Additionally some visitors may tease or grab at your pet. If the noise is bothering him, try adding background sounds (radio, TV) to distract him from the neighborhood hubbub. Best bet is to just put them in a room with some food and water for the night and check on them once in a while to let them know everything is fine.
3. Keep tempting bowls of candy out of range of sniffing noses. Notify kids (and some adults) in the house to put their candy bags away. Candy is for people. Chocolate, which contains caffeine and theobromine, and raisins are toxic to dogs – even small amounts cause vomiting and diarrhea. The darker the chocolate, the worse it can be. Plastic parts, candy or toy packaging can also pose a hazard when ingested. Tell kids the dangers of the treats and to not feed any to your pet.

4. Don’t leave any lit candles or Jack-O-Lanterns where they can be knocked over by a wagging tail or by a curious cat. Not only could your pet start a fire but they could severely burn themselves in the process. You should always keep phone numbers and directions for 24 pet emergency hospitals available (along with copies of important medical records) in case the unexpected happens.
