Romeo and Juliet CD
For this assignment you will demonstrate your knowledge of the play, its themes, and main ideas through music. Imagine that you are part of a production company that is creating a soundtrack of Romeo and Juliet. The director has given you the following guidelines and format for this assignment.
1. The CD will need to have five songs total.
2. In order to ensure that we, as a production crew, choose songs that will enhance the play as a whole,
you need to explain how the songs represent the mood/idea/theme for one of the following albums:
· The Prologue
· Act II
· Romeo & Juliet
· Montague & Capulet
· Tybalt & Mercutio
· Friar Lawrence & Nurse
· Act III
3. For your CD, the director would like to know your justification for your selection. In order to do this, you should select at least one important song lyric from each song that relates to lines from the play. Next, provide a written paragraph (6-10 sentences) that interprets, discusses, and analyzes the quotes and lyrics and how they relate to your album (topic).
FORMAT:
1. Must include quotes with citation—in parenthesis include act, scene and line #. For example, if I has a quote from Act I Scene II Line 47, I would write: (I.ii.47)
2. Must include title, artist and important song lyrics.
Examples format:
TRACK 1
Play Quote: “ ______” (Act.Scene.Lines)
SONG: Title and Artist
Important Lyric(s): “______”
Explanation/Analysis: ______
TRACK 2
Play Quote: “ ______” (Act.Scene.Lines)
SONG: Title and Artist
Important Lyric(s): “______”
Explanation/Analysis: ______
CONTINUE UNTIL YOU COMPLETE TRACK 5.
Requirements for Explanation/Analysis
In a coherent and well-written paragraph with a topic sentence and a structure, you should do one of the following:
1. Explain the quotes you have chosen—what they are saying and why you think they are a good selection for the CD. DO they represent a theme (it should!)? What is the theme? How do they show it?
2. Explain the song you have chosen—tell how it fits with the quotes and more specifically how it addresses the topic you have chosen for the album!
3. Decide on a theme for each song (themes should not be repeated). This is your analysis and you have to PROVE that you are correct by pulling out textual evidence that show that theme and then you have to show your understanding and interpretation through your discussion of the song quote(s).
Additional CD Requirements:
· Design a CD cover for your soundtrack and submit your assignment as if it was a booklet to go with the CD. The cover should be in color. Your CD will not be judged on your artistic ability; however, I will not give full credit for a stick drawing because it shows no real thought or effort.
· On the due date, you will present one song to the class by playing the song (clean versions only) and reading your Track information (interpretation/analysis) from your CD cover.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXTRA-CREDIT—you know you love it.
Burn a copy of the soundtrack onto a blank CD and submit with cover.
