Nomination Form

Nominations for the University Research Chair can be submitted by the deans of theVU faculties, the dean of ACTA and the dean of VUmc School of Medical Sciences.

The URC brochure as well as an electronic version of this document can be downloaded on Nominations should be addressed to the Executive Board of the VrijeUniversiteit Amsterdam and submitted electronically (in PDF portfolio) to Institutional Affairs, i.c. Farand Laghaei () before 1 October 2017.

A URC nomination consists of:

1) a completed Nomination Form (in English);

2) a complete nomination file for a regular

professorial chair (in English).[1]

This NominationForm must be no longer than three pages and serves as a synoptic summery of the

complete file.

The Nomination Form must demonstrate how the candidate meets and surpasses the standard quality requirements of a full professor and how the appointment as a URC holder will advance his/her career. In addition, the nomination form demonstrates in what way the research line of the candidate fits the long term research ambitions ofthe VrijeUniversiteit Amsterdam and in what way the candidate will contribute to further development of the VU research profile. This issue needs to be addressed in a short presentation and interview with the selection committee on October 5, 2016. The candidate’s view on his/her role as URC holder in relation to university’s profile must be addressed in the interview which is a required part of the nomination.

2. Scientific stature

Describe the candidate’s record of scholarly achievements and his/her unique and most striking contributions to science; demonstrate to what extent that record goes beyond that normally expected of a faculty member in the same rank.

3. Leadership qualities

Describe how the candidate has earned national and international recognition as being pre-eminent in her/his area of expertise and how that area fits the VU research profile[2].

4. Innovative contribution to science, including possible breakthroughs

Demonstrate that the candidate is considered by peers to be among future world research leaders in his/her research area. Indicate expectations with regard to future contributions to that research area and in what way will an appointment as URC help to bring those contributions about.

5. Power of attraction on students and young researchers

Explain in what way the candidate has demonstrated a continuing commitment to the support and development of students and emerging scholars.

6. Evidence of recognition

Demonstrate that the candidate has been recognized by her/his peers in the discipline through the receipt of grants, awards and/or other honors.

7. Embedding

Describe the view of the faculty on the future of the candidate’s discipline and the expected role of the nominee as part of the VU research profile. Does the faculty guarantee that a temporary URC appointment of five years will be turned into a permanent position as a full professor (if at the end of this period the URC holder still fulfills the expectations, and meet the standard quality requirements of the full professor as described in ‘NotitieHooglerarenbeleid’)?
