REPORT

A packed weekend of Interschools show jumping took place in Mullingar on the 20th and 21st April, where the Fagan family hosted the National All Ireland Schools ShowJumping Championships which included the Equestrian Interschools Ireland Showjumping league Finals. The league sponsored by jumpinaction and Equestrian World Maynooth was won after a tense and closely run competition by Newbridge College ahead of Colaiste Bhride Carnew and St gerards Bray. This is another big win for the College following its victory in the recent All Ireland Hunter Trial championships.

Action commenced on Saturday with the 5star transport sponsored open team event, which was a last chance to gain points before the final on Sunday and where free transport to the Hickstead schools championships were up for grabs. The Robert Fagan designed course was deceptively technical and in the end only six teams managed to qualify for the speed round. Of these three were from Colaiste Bhride Carnew, indicating the strength of its equestrian club and Carnew duly delivered as there was a one two for Colaiste bhride Carnew when the win was claimed to great excitement by Carnew’s Amber team (Emily Hadden on Indie, James Kenny riding Angel, Andy Kinsella riding Teddy and Frankie Kavanagh on Milly ) with Carnew’s Red team, Ellen Kavanagh and Midnight, Maria Breen and Jack, Seamus Tomkins on Mary and Emer Kavanagh on Irish Rose in second. Slotting into third was Newbridge College White team of Karen Casey on Prima Donna Girl , Luke Heffernan riding Croi, Emma O Callaghan on Alpaca, Megan Flanagan riding purple Mountain with Carnew again featuring in fourth. Ballymahon Longford claimed fifth and St Gerards Bray sixth.

The novice team championships attracted a large number of teams. Victory went to Mean Scoil Longford riders Viola Callaghan and Ashfield Trobadour , Shauna Farrell on Aeros boy , Abby Maloney riding Cassius , Kate Branigan on Clooncoe Dancer with Newbridge College representatives Lisa Sexton riding Glencauth Lad,, Amy Caroll and Killington Lady , Ava Flanagan and Cedars Morning Mist and Emily O Brien riding Cusheen Shadow in second and Monaghan Colllegiate riders Lucinda Kingston on Cornview Lady , Avril Mackerel on Petes Cody , Ciara Woods riding Inchmore Ranger and Gemma Treanor onSolaris Smokey boy, made their trip worthwhile to claim third.

Three exciting Individual competitions followed on. The Fagans provided a derby track which combined the showjumps in the sand with a short run across country, ending back in the sand to finish. Speed was the decider and the novice riders rode the same track but a different height. Victory in the open competition went to Individual league leader Mark Finnerty riding Too Posh for St Gerards closely followed by ChristopherWhyte Shanes Lad Mercy Ballymahonalso in contention for Individual league honours with Ciaran Fleming Kellys Lemon Jelly Gorey Community School claiming third ahead of Laura Finnerty riding Killowen Leo (St gerards) Ali Keane on Betty (Scoil Mhuire Trim) and Grainne Gibbons riding lough Allen Dancer (Carrick Community School). The novice derby victory went to Thea Curran riding Viva Las Vegas representing St Andrews. Amy Carroll riding Killington lady for Newbridge College was runner up and Sorcha De Braid on Silver Bramble from Salerno Galway was third.

The highlight of the day was the Puissance competition which attracted a total of 22 starters. It commenced at a manageable height of 1m, but as the wall increased in height combinations fell by the wayside. In the end victory was shared when Hannah Sutton riding Caprice and representing Newbridge College and Rebecca Kelly on Mickey for Loretto Mullingar cleared 165cm in fine style. Melek Fagan and Aaron Dolan both from St Finians were closest to these and shared second place when clearing 135cm. They rode Domino and Black Jack respectively.

Sunday’s action commenced with the Open Team event which incorporated the Equestrian Interschools league Final. The league, sponsored by Jump in Action and Equestrian World Maynooth has been hotly contested all season and among the starters were the four schools which were all in contention to win. Once more the Robert Fagan designed track took no prisoners and only three teams managed to leave the poles up to earn the honours to jump off for the top three places. Two other teams jumped off for fourth and fifth place when ending on four faults in the qualifying rounds. it ended in a five way jump off. It was an extremely close and tense battle but victory in the end went to the Newbridge College Black team ( Meadhbh Brassil, St james gate Lauren Heffernan, My Rock Star Aoife Murphy, Grey Chance,Hannah Sutton Caprice when producing faultless rounds from its nominated jump off riders Hannah Sutton and Lauren heffernan to see off rivals, Carnew represented by Aaron Brennan Red Arrow and in the process also claiming the league. Ballymahon took third place with Andrew Brennan, Lappy Lucy, Thomas Furlong, Rockville Shannon Aoife Kavanagh, Slieve Beagh. Newbridge white claimed fourth ahead of St Gerard’s in fifth. Carnew Red took sixth place when ending on eight faults in the qualifying round. St Gerard’s fifth placing was sufficient to claim third in the league ahead of Ballymahon in fourth

The Open individual followed and whilst Mark Finnerty on Too Posh (St Gerard’s) could only place fourth in the competition on the day this was enough for him to claim the League Individual win by the slimmest of margins (only one point) from Maedhbh Brassil (Newbridge college) Although out of luck in the competition on the day Ellen Radford Dodd 9Holy Child Killiney) still had enough points to claim third in the league with Laura Finnerty (St Gerard’s) in fourth followed by Christopher Whyte (Mercy College Ballymahon and Aoife Murphy(Newbridge College). Laura Finnerty was the winner on the day with Maedhbh Brassil in second and third place.

The Open action concluded with the inaugural 110 Premier competition which attracted great support and was judged a resounding success. This class was sponsored by Horse Sport Ireland who has pledged its support for Equestrian Interschools Ireland. Indeed HSI presented bursaries to the school which won the league, the league individual winner and the winner of the Premier class, all of whom will receive training with International rider and High Performance Coach tom Slattery later in the summer.

The premier class produced five clears from a large list of starters, who jumped off over a shortened course. Producing a cracking clear on the appropriately named Cracker Commanche secured victory for local rider Nano Healy (St Mary’s CBS Mullingar) over Carnew representative

James Kenny Laura Finnerty & Derg Twist (St Gerard’s) was third with Melek Fagan and Essenar Top Gear, St Finians, in fifth and Puissance winner Hannah Sutton riding Caprice for Newbridge College in fifth.

Meanwhile the stars of the future were competing in the other arena where the Primary Schools team and individual championships took place. The team Championship went to Co Clare, Cratloe NS riders Mark Mc Donagh and Magamind, Kara Gupta Mogi, Tom Gleeson and Bullet and John Gallagher and Trigger produced a fine display to see off rivals Gaelscoil Laitroma Ns represented by Darragh Perrin on Ashe, Hannah Bird on Mars , Ann Crosley riding GG and Killian Perrin on Poppy, )

Sonna NS riders Rose Dolan and William, Emma Dolan and Misty, Joseph Boyan on Magic, and Blaithin Keena riding Hector took third. The individual competition caused great celebrations for local school St Marys NS Mullingar. Robbie Healy on Misty and Blackie took first and second and fellow pupil Molly Kiernan riding CJ came third. Earlier the Novice individual Accumulator was won by Emma Flynn on Seargent for St Finian’s. Runner up slot went to Sophie Walsh on Horseleap Bruno for Wilson’s Hospital.

Although the league is over for this school year action continues.
