Option I: Shooting Kabul: By N.H. Senzai

Your Task: As you read Shooting Kabul think about how the characters and their lives are similar and different to you. Think about how life in Afghanistan is different from life in the United States.

Steps in the process: Write what you have learned about the characters in the book and the conflicts they are facing. Use the graphic organizers provided for this book.

Option II: Gathering Blue: By Lois Lowry

Your Task: As you read Lowry’s novel, Gathering Blue make notes on different types of conflict the main character, Kira, encounters. At the beginning of the novel, Katrina, Kira’s mother, dies and Kira is left homeless. Kira is fearful, especially when Vandara, a vicious and angry woman, tells her that she is worthless. Examine the strength Kira displays when she faces the Council of Guardians. How does Kira overcome conflict and show strength and courage throughout the novel?

Steps in the process:

  1. Reference the text to find specific quotes or passages, include page number, that show the various types of conflict endured by the main character, Kira.
  2. Explain how each quote is an example for each type of conflict found
  3. Determine if Kira’s strength allows her to overcome the conflict, if it is resolved. If it is resolved, explain how. If it is not resolved, explain why not.
