APPA SPEAKER GUIDELINES

2010 National Conference

Orlando, Florida

June 18-23, 2010

I. INTRODUCTION

The American Public Power Association (APPA) is a national service organization representing municipal and other state or local government-owned electric utilities throughout the United States. APPA member utilities serve some of the nation's largest cities, such as Los Angeles, Sacramento, Seattle, Phoenix, Jacksonville, Austin, San Antonio, Nashville, Memphis, Cleveland, Omaha and Orlando. The majority of APPA member utilities, however, are located in small and medium-sized communities in every state except Hawaii. The median size public power utility in the United States serves about 2,000 electric customers. One in every seven Americans — or about 45 million — receives electricity from a public power utility.

The National Conference draws approximately 1,000 attendees; about 40% of those are utility policy officials (elected and appointed board and city council members), while the remainder are mostly public power executives - CEOs, general managers, and high-level utility employees. The Conference also brings together several hundred vendors, suppliers, consultants, and industry partners with the Public Power Expo.

II. GENERAL INFORMATION

Conference Registration

Speakers who attend conference sessions in addition to the ones at which they speak are required to register and pay the regular conference registration fee, based on membership.

Speakers who attend the conference only to speak, and do not attend any other sessions, do not have to pay a registration fee. Please notify LeAnne Nienhuis at 202/467-2973 or if you intend only to come and speak, and not to participate in the rest of the conference, and we will give you a complimentary registration.

Additional fees are required to attend the pre-conference seminars.

If you have questions about APPA’s registration policy for speakers, please contact LeAnne Nienhuis, 202/467-2973 or .

Travel arrangements and costs are the responsibility of the participant. APPA will not reimburse for changes in travel expenditures regardless of the cause, including the cancellation of a course, meeting, or conference.

III. FORMS FOR SPEAKERS

Speakers are asked to complete a number of forms prior to the conference. These forms allow us to enhance the experience of our conference attendees and the overall value of the conference. We appreciate your taking the time to review these forms.

Biography

So that we may introduce you at your session, we ask you to submit a brief biographical sketch.

Please submit basic information – one or two brief paragraphs – covering your current professional affiliation and work experience, particularly experiences relevant to public power and education. We strongly recommend against using a resume as a biographical sketch.

For your convenience, included in this packet is a biographical form you may choose to utilize. If you already have a biographical sketch, you may submit it as is and do not need to complete the enclosed form.

Speaker Release and License Form

APPA makes available copies of Conference presentations available to Conference attendees and APPA members on our web site, www.APPAnet.org.

The enclosed “Release and License” form grants APPA permission to makes copies of your National Conference presentation in both print and electronic forms. We ask that you verify your presentation is your own and does not violate any copyright laws. The form also says that you understand that you will not receive any royalties from APPA’s distribution of your paper. Please read, sign, and return the enclosed form.

Audio/Visual Aids

If you will be using a PowerPoint presentation, please bring your own laptop or coordinate with another speaker in your session to share theirs. APPA regrets that at this time, we are unable to provide laptops for session presentations.

Each meeting room will be set up with an LCD projector and screen, as well as a lectern and microphone.

Additional equipment needed for your presentation may be requested by completing the attached A/V form.

IV. PRESENTATIONS

Presentations will be posted online for Conference attendees to download and print approximately one week before the conference; after the Conference, the presentations are made available to all APPA members who were not able to attend the meeting.

To ensure your presentation is included on the APPA web site for conference attendees to print before the conference, please e-mail your presentation to LeAnne Nienhuis at at least two full weeks before the conference.

Important: Before APPA can make copies of your presentation available on our web site, you must return the enclosed “Permission to Reproduce and Post Speech” form.

Paper Presentations

APPA does not make paper copies of handouts available on-site at the Conference. Attendees wishing to have a paper version of presentations available at the conference will be responsible for printing their own copies and bringing them with them to the conference.

If you want hard copies of your presentation to be available in your meeting room, you may ship copies of your own presentation to the Orlando World Center Marriott.

If you plan to make hard copies available, APPA recommends you bring 100-150 copies. You will be responsible for ensuring your materials make it to yourmeeting room and for all fees incurred.
