This guide was compiled to assist Title 1 schools with planning their parent involvement programs. It is a fluid document and will be updated regularly as content becomes available. It is not meant to limit school’s parent involvement activities but to be used as a resource for planning. Parent Involvement Workshops

Academic

  • Effective Parent/Teacher Conferences1 hour

Teaching parents how to prepare and get most out of a parent teacher conference. Workshop includes: what questions to ask, identifying the purpose of the conference, how to read report cards and progress reports and how to be an active listener.

  • Life After High School1 hour

Students and parents will learn about options for continuing education after high school and the importance of staying in school through graduation. Topics include programs of study, financial aid, and admissions requirements.

  • Parent Guide to NCLB1 hour

  • Passport to Success8 – 1 ½ hour workshops

Passport helps parents improve their ability to enhance a positive attitude toward learning and provide a productive learning environment for their children. Passport to Success will also help parents teach their children how to manage time, listen and concentrate; manage homework and study textbooks; prepare for and take tests; take notes and organize information; improve their memory and thinking skills; and improve their reading skills.   • Read and Rise Family Conversations

Read and Rise Family Conversations workshop curriculum provides participants with an understanding of the skills their children need to become strong readers and learners. The workshops have been designed to foster families’ active role in helping children acquire and build their early literacy skills. The curriculum combines principles of early childhood development, parent education, anthropology, and sociology. English and Spanish. Cost for curriculum varies depending on quantity ordered.

The workshop covers all five components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension - all in a rip-roaring fashion that shows off reading as the great adventure it is. Participants also get the RoC Book-aneer Gameboard. It's filled with fun activities that allow kids to apply what they learned over the next 21 days - the timeframe experts say is necessary to form a habit. Pricing available on website.

  • Thinking Maps – Parent training/awareness night.

Pgs. 26-28 in A Language for Learning Trainer’s Guide. An overview of Thinking Maps to inform parents of their uses and purpose of the school-wide focus. The training includes three formats to choose from for presenting the information to parents. English but could be easily translated.

Health and Wellness

  • Chronic Disease & Self-Management2.5 hours/week, for 6 weeks

Six week curriculum developed by Stanford Univ. School of Medicine. Purpose is to help people gain self-confidence inthe ability to control their symptoms and how their health problems affect their lives. For Adults with one or more chronic diseases such as: diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, COPD, asthma, etc. English and Spanish. No Cost.

  • Dental Prevention & Screenings½ day - All day

Includes vouchers for emergency care. There is a prescreen for Medicare and insurance. Must be approved through the health department before scheduling. English and Spanish. No Cost.

  • Diabetes Workshop1 – 1.5 hours

The workshop is a one-time class that discusses diabetes, good nutrition, local resources, glucose testing and possible complications. Diabetics will receive a glucose meter with test strips. English and Spanish. No Cost.

  • Florida Kid Care20 - 30 minutes

Presentation includes information on what Florida Kid Care is. How to sign up for the program, provider information and resource assistance. English and Creole. No Cost.

  • Immunization Presentation30 minutes

  • Families in Transition 10 – 2.5 hours sessions

F.I.T. is a 10-week decision-making skills program for parents. F.I.T. helps parents strengthen communication with their children and helps them take responsibility for their actions. Classes address life and social skills such as negotiation, listening, decision-making, etc. English. Cost for food, child care and workbook materials for parents.

St Lucie County Sheriff's Office

Provides parents tips on internet safety and literature on how they can conduct searches for sexual offenders and predators from their home. This is an excellent presentation from the detective that works these crimes in our county. She provides real examples. English. No Cost.

Successful Parenting - Successful Children

This module is one of a series of professional development modules offered by Kids at Hope University offering evidence based protocols and strategies in support of the success of all children.   • Redirecting Children’s Behavior5 – 3 Hour Sessions

Parenting course focusing on skills to build self-esteem, handle power struggles and fighting, parent as a team, discipline using consequences instead of punishment, build cooperation and guide children in making healthy, safe decisions. No Cost.
