EBSCOhost video script

Slide 1: Welcome to the UHI introduction to searching the EBSCO host databases. A separate video showing you how to login to our online resources is available on the website.

Slide 2: Once you have logged into EBSCOhost, you will be presented with a choice of databases. The text under each highlights the subject areas that each database covers.

Slide 3: During this video we will focus on Academic Search Premier, which covers various subject areas and includes full-text access to around 4000 journals.

Clicking ‘Academic Search Premier’ takes you to the initial search screen.

Slide 4: Although the search screen contains many features, we are going to focus on a fairly basic search. Firstly, select the search box.

Slide 5: Enter your chosen keywords.

Slide 6: Any additional terms can be added in the following boxes.

Slide 7: Selecting the full-text option will return only those results for which the entire article is available in this database. Ticking peer reviewed journals will return only those articles that are of good academic standard.

Slide 8: You may also wish to limit your results to articles published between specific dates. To do this, select the year box.

Slide 9: Enter the date at which you want the results to start. Then click the next box.

Slide 10: Now enter the year at which you wish your results to stop.

When you are finished selecting your options, click Search.

Slide 11: As you can see, there are 36 articles deemed relevant to our search.

Slide 12: When you find an article that interests you, click on its title for further information.

Slide 13: The resulting page provides information about who wrote the article and the journal in which it was originally published. Subject terms are useful for further limiting your search or providing ideas for new searches. If you are storing your references in bibliographic management software, such as Refworks, you can choose the export option here.

Slide 14: The abstract is a short paragraph that summarises the content of the article. It is useful in helping you decide whether or not reading the full article would be worthwhile.

Slide 15: If you want to view the entire article, scroll back to the top of the page and click the full-text icon.

Slide 16: On entering the article you can either choose to read it on screen or, if you prefer, print or save a copy to read later.

Slide 17: Once you have finished reading the article, click ‘Results list’ to go back to your original results.

Slide 18: From here you can either continue to browse your results list, limit your search further by using the options on either side of the screen, or start again by clicking on ‘new search’ at the top of the screen.

Slide 19: You are now ready to begin a new search. This brings us to the end of our introduction to Ebscohost – Academic Search Premier.

End: Thank you for watching. Please contact the library if you require help with EBSCO or any of our other online resources.
