Review of 1951 News in Jersey County

A review of the 1951 news in Jersey County will appear in the Jersey County Democrat News today and on January 4. The events of the first half of the year up until June 1 are in this issue and the events of the last half will appear in next week’s paper.

JANUARY

January 5--Paul Kenny Ferenbach, seventeen year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Ferenbach of Jerseyville, was killed in a truck accident early New Year’s morning. Twenty Jersey county young men enlisted in the Air Corps. Firm Cooke, retired Jersey County farmer, died January 2. Doctors under 50 notified to register with Selective Service on January 15. Robert Erwin, JCHS teacher, called for duty in Army January 27. Robert Reese named chairman of Civilian Defense program. James S. Bell of Jerseyville and Kathryn Diestalkamp were married in Alton. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Kessinger, married December 23, establish their home in Alton. William P. Felter of Jerseyville and Margaret L. Duewer of Loami were married in Springfield. Leonard Brower of Quincy, former resident of Grafton, was killed December 23, in a car accident near Liberty, Illinois. Miss Mary Roerig of Jerseyville died New Year’s Day.

January 12—Pfc. Jesse A. Casse of Fieldon was liberated by his Chinese captors three days after he was taken prisoner in Korea. Pfc. Everett Wade of Jerseyville was reported missing in action as of November 29 in Korea. Kenneth Searles accepted chairmanship of Red Cross in Jersey County with a goal of $4500. Fire loss in Jerseyville during year 1950 was $14,340. Land moccasin was killed by Henry Ford. Presbyterian Church named officers for year at congregational meeting. Everett Parsell, former resident of Jerseyville, was seriously hurt in accident near Sarasota, Florida. Martin Gibbons, retired business man of Jerseyville, died January 10. Andrew Johnson died Wednesday. Earl Adams renamed president of Jersey State Bank. Dates of Jersey County Fair announced as July 23-28. Distinguished Service Cross was awarded to Pfc. Emery Northcutt, Brighton soldier, who was reported missing in action. Ordinance was introduced for issuance of bonds for new construction and improvement of Jerseyville Waterworks. Miss Gertrude Goen became bride of James F. Valerius. Mrs. Ethel Leasenfelt died January 10. Miss Melba Cunningham and Robert Krause were married January 7. The wedding of Miss Helen McAdams of Jerseyville and Leland Welch of Greenfield took place January 7. Miss Thelma Eileen Briggs became the bride of Charles Edwards Davis. The wedding of Miss Elizabeth Ann Lee and Don Hoyt Ray took place at the Otterville Church. Miss Bernadine Barton and Clayton Ridenour Jr., were married in Arkansas. Miss Ella Dodson died of pneumonia. Alvin Frederick Antrae, Fieldon farmer, died at Carrollton Hospital. Ira Cottingham was re-elected president of the Jerseyville Mutual Country Fire Insurance Company. George Varble, Kane business man, died Saturday morning.

January 19—Mayo Robert Afee, Jr., of Brighton, fatally injured in accident east of Jerseyville. Farm companies distributed dividend checks totaling over $39,000. Mrs. Nellie Welch installed as president of Woman’s Relief Corps. Mrs. Adah Cook seated as Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge. Ninety-eight pints of blood collected by Bloodmobile at Grafton. Corporal Ralph Sears and Corporal Raymond Heath had chance meeting in Taegu. Judge Joseph E. Fleming of East St. Louis was named president of State Bank of Jerseyville. Miss Nola Mae Worley and Sgt. William Scoggins were married in Pocahontas, Arkansas. Father P.P. Heinen was guest speaker at “Men’s Night” meeting of Junior Woman’s Club. A daughter was born January 14 to Mr. and Mrs. Antoine Godar of Grafton. A son, their second child, was born January 13 to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ferenbach of Jerseyville. A daughter was born January 12 to Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Pieper. A son was born January 17 to Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Beiermann of White Hall, formerly of Jerseyville. H. Irwin David, Harold Parsell and Russell Campbell were named officers of Illinois valley Hereford Association. Miss Mary Agnes Mazanec of St. Louis and Robert Shortal were married at the Cathedral in St. Louis. Miss Peggy Jane Archer was bride of Robert Warren Stephenson. Wedding of Miss Sharon Williams and Billy Hugh Shields took place in Greenfield. Miss Bernita Lee Mans and Corporal Clarence Bechtold were married January 13. Mrs. Nellie Durney died on Monday morning. Edward Gerson, Otis Cooper and Steward Antrae were chosen new members of Christ Church Council.

January 26—Earl Woolsey, C.G. Groppel, Sr., and Jesse T. Hamblen filed for mayor nomination. Clarence Pickerel, Ernest Pruitt, Loren Holtman, Herman Kirchner and E.W. Meyer entered commissioner race. Robert Mindrup died at Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. Mrs. Harriet Alice Barnes died at her home. Sixteen soil practices under ACP adopted in Jersey County. Fire department answered ten calls. Postmaster Byron L. McDow underwent surgery. Charles White headed Boy Scout fund drive. Morris Waggoner renamed president of Farm Bureau. Corporal Darrell Duff of Grafton declared dead by government. Seven Jerseyans reported for military duty. Robert Powel was found dead in bed. Radiosonda found on F.H. Hagen farm. Miss Dorothy Drainer became the bride of Alfred Woelfel. Wedding of Miss Ella Mae Jennings of East Alton and Duane Weller of Jerseyville occurred. Robert Burns, formerly of Grafton, and Miss Dorothy Dunphy were married in Hartland, Wisconsin. Miss Lois Wock became the bride of John Fessler. Sharon Calvin headed junior Modern Woodmen. Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Gibson marked 44th wedding date. Miss Dorothy Burch of Jerseyville became the bride of Clyde Darr of Medora. Linda Boner installed as Worthy Adviser of Rainbow Girls. Private Colum Kilcram, formerly of Jerseyville, and Miss Irene Patton of Chicago were married in Wisconsin. Attorney and Mrs. W.F. Hacker and Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Pirtle moved into new homes in Oakwood Acres. John Darnell died in Alton. Death of Rollie Slaten occurred January 18. Mrs. Emma Sunderland died in Carrollton Nursing Home. Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. William Kibler died. Edward Gerson installed as president of Church Council at Christ Church. Jerry Booth elected Marshal of Seventh District DeMolay. Son born January 20 to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Johnston. Third child, a son, born to Mr. and Mrs. John Wehrly, Jr. William Forrester hurt in accident.

FEBRUARY

February 2—Nineteen JCHS students qualified for High Honors at end of first semester. J. “Woody” Ingram receives spot promotion to Lieutenant Colonel in Korea. Mr. and Mrs. Eric Haun and children were injured in auto accident. Jersey County was held in grip of sub-zero temperatures. Farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Fritz, Mrs. Juanita Whitlock and Calvin Whitlock, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Morris E. Waggoner were selected in Home Improvement contest. Frank H. Markman, local educator, died in hospital at Olney. Mrs. Jessie Beiermann sold the building occupied by the Garland Steak house. John W. Underwood of Jerseyville died January ??. Carl Crocker, seventy-six, died ?? hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert ?? moved to Clayton. Mr. and Mrs. Fred VanTassel, former residents of Jerseyville vicinity, marked their golden wedding anniversary at their home in Princeville. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Flamm of Jerseyville marked fifty-seventh wedding anniversary. Chester ?use, a retired railroad brakeman, died January 30. Funeral services were held at St. John’s Catholic Church in Medora January 30 for Mrs. Bridget Tober who died at her home. Reverend Harry Fish of Kane officiated at the wedding of his son, James P. Fish and Miss Martha Wilson of Alton. Reverend Marshall Gill of Grand ???, Illinois, accepted call to pastorate of Medora Baptist church. A daughter, Linda Elizabeth, was born January 27 to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Powers. A son was born January 25 to Mr. and Mrs. Whitton Brill. Mr. and Mrs. Cletus Meuth were the parents of a son born January 29. A daughter was born January 29 to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bridges of Fieldon. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schertz of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, were parents of daughter born January 26. A daughter was born January 24 to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Buchanan. A daughter was born January 30 to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Martin, Jr. A son was born January 20 to Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Mulkey. Funeral rites were held January 31 for Mrs. Mary Schermerhorn whose death occurred January 31. Ralph Edgar Wilson of Jerseyville died in Memorial Hospital in Alton. Richard Quinn, 90, died in nursing home in Alton. Miss Lola Chandler chosen DAR girl at Medora High School.

February 9—Jersey, Quarry, Ruyle, Elsah, Mississippi and Piasa Townships were slated to name supervisors in spring elections. Supervisor Gus F. Heneghan of Jerseyville, died suddenly at his home February 8. Paul vegan of Peoria accepted teaching position at Jerseyville Community High School. Announce “open house” for Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pegue, golden wedding celebrants of McClusky. Reverend J. Winifred Stoeker, pastor of Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church in Jerseyville, accepted pastorate in Okawville. Joda B. Hicks, Jersey painter who has been ill was found dead at his home. Kenneth Searles accepted chairmanship of 1951 Red Cross drive. Mrs. Sarah C. Gauf died at her home in Jerseyville February 6. A seven pound ten ounce daughter was born February 3 to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Crone. Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Purcell were the parents of a son born February 3. Announcement was received of the birth of a daughter to Captain and Mrs. Thomas Bloomer of Pueblo, Colorado, formerly of Jerseyville. Miss Patsy Lou Alexander of Jerseyville and Gene Moore of Piasa were married February 3. The wedding of Miss Louise Wendle and Eugene Tungett took place at St. Michael’s Church in Beltrees. Miss Rita M. Schleeper became bride of Claude Davis, Jr. Miss Ruby Abramis of Witt of Fieldon were married January 29. The wedding of Miss Sharon Pointer and Eugene Bennett of Medora occurred on Sunday afternoon. Miss Manz of Jacksonville and Thomas J. Randolph of Jerseyville were married January 31. Mr. and Mrs. Levi Little marked their silver anniversary on February 3 and Mr. and Mrs. Laverne Nelson were married twenty- five years on February 6. Mrs. Fanny Cope of Brighton died February 6 at Macoupin County Hospital. James Perry Powel, former resident of Jerseyville, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alton. The death of William Henry Winters occurred February 6. Crestal Q. Duff, twenty-six year old Grafton resident died February 5.

February 16—Pfc. Thomas J. Fitzgibbons of Delhi was reported missing in action in Korea. Eight goals were listed for Soil Conservation work in Jersey County in 1951. Mr. and Mrs. William Stephenson announced plans for the observance of their golden wedding anniversary. Linda Boner, High school senior, was named 1951 DAR girl. Coating of ice made traveling conditions bad. Name of Pfc. John Drainer, was mentioned in an enemy propaganda broadcast. Youth Week observance at Jerseyville Baptist Church. Mrs. Edna Maxwell, former Jersey resident, died at Beverly Farms in Godfrey. Residence property owned by Mr. and Mrs. George Fisk of Nutwood was razed by fire. Mrs. Sarah Taylor, formerly of Jerseyville, died in Alton. Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Ross of Tracy, California, formerly of Jerseyville, marked silver wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Morris Kirchner of Edwardsville were parents of a daughter, Miss Lois Griffith, senior at JCHS, became bride of Hayden Cooke of Jerseyville. Miss Dalles Cravens of Jerseyville and Donald Cummings of Carrollton were married here at the Church of Christ. The wedding of Miss Lorene Wendle of Dow and Private Leonard Pohlman of Calhoun County took place February 13. Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Vanausdoll of Dow marked their fortieth wedding anniversary. Miss Velma Jean Stanton and Loren Darr, of Medora, were married February 10. Mr. and Mrs. Mark Devening and Mrs. Arnold Devening were hurt in an auto accident in St. Louis. John Greeling of Dow fractured hip in a fall. Rebekahs initiated class of eleven. C.W. johns of Danville, formerly of Jerseyville, died February 7. Ralph C. Goodrich of Grafton died at the age of eighty-one. Funeral rites were held for James R. Tober, former Medora resident, who died in Chicago.

February 23—Mayor Earl Woolsey, Jess P. Hamblen and C.G. Groppel, Sr., were candidates in Mayoralty race on February 27. Conferences of workers for Red Cross Drive was held. Home Bureau goal of 508 members set for June 1. Byron Cary and W.W. Legate were re-elected directors of the Jersey County Soil Conservation District. Father of Captain Leroy Varble, merchant seaman reported missing, received word he was in a Texas hospital. Miss Dolores Platto of Kane joined staff of St. Luke’s Hospital in St. Louis. Roland Camerer, fifteen, returned to Jerseyville after army officials learned his true age and discharged him from service. Mrs. Minnie Anderson of Piasa died of burns suffered on January 30. Jersey Legion entered bid for District Convention. Miss Jeanne Shephard accepted a position at State Bank. Over one hundred guests attended golden wedding anniversary celebration of Mr. and Mrs. William Stephenson. Mr. and Mrs. James Inman moved to Carlinville. John W. Gilworth, former resident of Jerseyville, died in Wood River Community hospital. Mrs. Harriet O. Parsell died February 16 following an extended illness. Paul Erb was chosen president of the Jersey Farm Supply Company. Jacob Mode, former Jersey business man, died in California. Births included a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Fleminig on February 18, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Heitzig on February 16, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. John Feyerabend of Alton on February 16, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Francis Lynn of Denver, Colorado, on February 16, a son to Mr. and Mrs. William Bizallion on February 18, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Robert G’Sell on February 20, and a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Heath of Dow on February 20.

MARCH

March 2—Earl Woolsey and C.G. Groppel, Sr., were winners in mayoralty primary race. Names of Dr. Bryan Caffery, Marion Beach, and F.A. Munsterman were written in for commissioners and their names together with the filed candidates. E.W. Meyer, Herman Kirchner, Loran Holtman, Clarence Pickerel and Ernest Pruitt, were slated to appear on the General Ballot in April. Special vote on Water Works Fund called for March 20. JCHS cage squad advanced to finals of Regional meet. Miss Alyda Zeiser died at her home in Jerseyville. A.E. Crone was appointed supervisor to fill vacancy caused by death of Gus Heneghan. Announced plans for golden wedding celebration of Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Cary. Thirty students participated in amateur contest. District American Legion Convention in Jerseyville set for July 14 and 15. Lions Club Carnival set for June 11 to June 16. Received induction call for eleven men on March 16. Delph Schwarz, Jr., former Jersey resident, died suddenly in Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Day marked forty-fifth wedding anniversary. Frank W. Flaherty, formerly of Jerseyville, died in Chicago. Leroy Varble, Merchant Marine, erroneously reported seriously injured, arrived home on leave. Word was received of death of Gelder Wycoff in Mississippi. Three seniors at Jersey Community High School announced engagements, the prospective brides and grooms being Idella Davis and Russell Bridgewater, Bernice Smith and Private Donald Klunk, and Miss Kathleen Lagemann and Private Russell Zimmerman. Jerseyville friends learned of the marriage of Reverend A.B. Carson, formerly of Jerseyville and Mrs. Grace Morley of Macomb. Miss Mary Jo Aderton and Ensign William Prange were married at the Presbyterian Church in Hardin. Births included a daughter born February 18 to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bailey, a son born February 27 to Mr. and Mrs. Ben Ketchum, a son born to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Smith on February 27, and a daughter born February 28 to Mr. and Mrs. Russell Logan. Kenneth Ashlock, sailor, was home on leave after several months in the Korean area. Charles McKinney, retired teamster of Fieldon, died. Body of James Monroe Schooley was brought here from Eureka Springs, Arkansas, for burial in the Lax Cemetery. Miss Glenda Mae Woolsey and Keith Darr were married Wednesday afternoon.

March 9—A.M. Heisler, proprietor of the Jersey Bakery for the past ten years, was fatally injured in car crash Tuesday night. Jerseyville cagers in sectional finals at Pittsfield. Winners announced in county-wide art contest. Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Fritz, district winners in Illinois Farm Home Improvement Contest. George Shaw of Jerseyville received the Bronze star for merit service in Korea. Pearl ?? was elected to the board of directors of the National Farm Association. Committees were ?? for the annual Lions carnival. Selective Service received call for eight men to report March 30. Richard Bell was elected Councillor of the DeMolays. ?? Lamb was found dead at home here. Dennis B. Shea, former resident, died in Alton. Miss Richey became the bride of ?? Elliot. Charles M. Homer, a fisherman of Grafton, died. Clara Olston of Springfield became the bride of Billy Spring??? of Jerseyville. Included in the report for the week were a ?? March 3 to City Attorney Mrs. Wilbur Hacker, a daughter, February 21 to Mr. and Mrs. ??? Smith, a daughter born March 4 to Mr. and Mrs. Milton ???, a son born February 27 to Mr. and Mrs. Billy Simpson, a daughter born March 7 to Mr. and Mrs. Don Sloan, a son born February 27 to Mr. and Mrs. T.R. Linak of Louisville, Kentucky, a son born March 2 to Mr. and Mrs. ?? Schumann, a son born March ?? to Mr. and Mrs. E. Heafner, a daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. ??? Greene of Monrovia, California, and a son born March 4 to Mr. and Mrs. Gene Bowker.
