Notes for Freshers’ Training – Monday 10th September

Welcome

Introduce Neil who will lead the session – be handing over to him after these notes and then will take baton back to go over the rota and other practical arrangement for rest of week.

Exits. Toilets, fire alarm

Rotas and practical arrangements

Give out t shirts; hand back to me, laundered, at welcome lunch 24th or to my room before

Locations – DSB UG Resource Room/resource room; 7 GS concourse and 7 GS reception; 4.01 DSB – one computer in all locations

Refreshments – two locations, UG Resource Room DSB and concourse 7 GS. Pastries/juice will be delivered to the helpers’ desks approx. 10am

Hand out rotas – go over rotas, talk about shifts. Students are expected to self manage the task to some degree therefore we expect them to sort out changes to the rota amongst themselves. Changes communicated to Judy McCulloch. However, we expect and rely on them to attend when they have indicated. Some overlaps – use these to check other nearby locations.

Before tomorrow – go round all the locations to familiarise yourself with them and what resources are available for Freshers. Feel free to change/move around things to suit. If you need an extra table see ken Vogel.

The Freshers Helpers desk in basement will have notepads/pens/leaflets for you – if need more stationery come to 4th floor DSB and ask for Julie. Whose on duty 1st shift in a location tomorrow? Hand out desk labels and info to them

Tuesday (tomorrow) –

If there are no students about at the posts then be proactive – check other posts, are they busy? Leave a note if you leave your post to help elsewhere – say where you are so that students can come and find you if they need to.

Pressure points:

·  Meetings as per the ‘what you must do in Freshers week’

·  Welcome meeting – packs and then DoS a list for each of you keep it in your back pocket!

·  Academic Fair

·  How to find the venue for the subject talks and soc talks

Any ?s or problems see me in room 4.13 and I will try to do a ward round each day – gets more difficult as week progresses.
