MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 19, 2016 MEETING

Roger Nelson, Chairman called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M.

MEMBER’S PRESENT: Roger Nelson, Chairman, Rosemary Hogan-Cunningham, Vice-Chairman, Sue Cannon, Cindy Cooper, Douglas Glazier, Peter Lambert, Connie Nelson, and Barbara Sullivan.

ALSO PRESENT: Ann Marie Claffey, Director, John Sullivan, Municipal Agent, Lori Lapointe, Assist. To Director, and Sherry Townsend, Transportation Coordinator.

ABSENT: None.

PUBLIC: None.

SECRETARY’S REPORT: Upon a motion by Barbara Sullivan, and seconded by Sue Cannon the June 20, 2016 minutes were approved. Douglas Glazier abstained.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Ann Marie Claffey presented the Treasurers Report/Budget and CONA Fund Report provided by the Finance Department as of August 31, 2016. Discussion followed on account financial information. Upon a motion by Sue Cannon to accept the Treasurers Reports as provided by the Finance Department, seconded by Barbara Sullivan; the Treasurers Reports were accepted as presented.

PUBLIC INPUT: None.

BUS COORDINATOR’S REPORT: Ann Marie Claffey presented the June, July, and August 2016 reports as prepared by Sherry Townsend. Discussion on passes, mileage, shuttle service, ridership, trips, drivers, new phone service, and driver hours. Upon a motion by Connie Nelson to accept the June, July and August Bus Coordinator Reports, seconded by Peter Lambert; the Bus Coordinators Reports were accepted as presented.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT: Ann Marie Claffey presented the Directors Report.

Ø  Programs and Upcoming events. September Programs include: Craft Time (9/20), Big E Trip (9/21), AARP Safe Driving (9/26), Nutrition Class (9/28), Time to Talk-Crisis Management (9/29). October Programs include: Medicare Workshop with Bill McCloskey (10/3), Medication Management-Seabury (10/4), Time to Talk "Center for Vein Restoration" (10/27), Health & Wellness Expo (10/21), Oktoberfest (10/26), and Veterans Dinner (11/10). Locks Fitness Center had approximately 206 visits in June, 204 in July, and 219 in August.

Charter Trips include: Green Mountain Flyer (9/27), Granite State-Oktoberfest (10/5), Saturday Night Fever (11/3), UCONN Women's Jimmy V Classic (12/4), and Holly Days & Stocking Stuffer (12/7), and Williams Inn Boars Head Feast (12/8). Monthly Casino trips to Foxwoods and Mohegan.

Ø  The center now sells postage stamps and has a mail box.

Ø  Evergreen Healthcare BP Clinics will be held on the first and third Thursday's.

Ø  Bickford's will be here on second and fourth Thursday's when available.

Ø  The high school RISE program has two students who follow Kevin around on a mentor program.

Ø  Youth Service/Family & Community WPS is holding Grandparents Day at North Street School on October 19. At South Street School on October 25.

Ø  Technology Class will be offered on October 12. Includes: computer, phones, and tablets.

Ø  The Senior Center is participating in the Silver Sneakers Programs.

Ø  The center is looking into Outreach Programs with volunteers, transportation, home visits, handyman services, lawn care, etc.

Ø  First National Bank of Suffield will be at the center on the third Friday, same time as the attorney, for banking and legal issues.

Ø  The center will put up Christmas Decorations and displays.

Ø  The Senior Club has seen a decline in membership, the need for board members, and may limit the number of times they meet.

COMMITTEE REPORT AND ACTIONS:

a)  Transportation Committee. N/A.

MUNICIPAL AGENT REPORT: John Sullivan reported the October SCAN will have information on 'keeping muscle mass as you age'. Muscle mass loss starts at the age of 35, and continues because you use less muscle as you age.

OLD BUSINESS:

Barbara Sullivan asked about the delivery of the Hartford Courant.

Douglas Glazier asked about the Silver Sneaker Program.

NEW BUSINESS:

N/A.

CHAIRMAN'S REMARKS:

Discussion:

·  Increase SCAN email distribution by including town organizations ie: Republican and Democrat Town Committees, Lions Club.

·  Decreasing the CONA Board from 9 members to a 7 member board.

·  Changing the word 'senior' in the Center's name, such as community center.

ADJOURNMENT:

Upon a motion by Sue Cannon and seconded by Cindy Cooper the meeting adjourned at 8:08 P.M.
