Baylor Literary Society

Fall 2010

The Fringe

This semester we will be focusing on the fringe of literature, at least for undergrad college students. His includes authors, works, genres, or methods of analysis that aren’t focused on in the Standard English Curriculum that you will receive at Baylor. We’ve also enlisted several professors to come in and talk with us, but those days will not be Teacher Tells Us days. The Literary Society is focused entirely on collaborative learning and discussion. No matter how much you know or how much you’ve read, you’re welcome to sit and chat with us.

Meetings: 7:30 p.m. (unless the schedule says otherwise) at Carroll Science. First floor lobby.

Susan Strehle: Post Colonial literature: why it exists, why it’s interesting, and what you should know.

Sci Fi: We’ll look at an example of the expansive genre entitled “Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect”.

Symbol Clash: We’ll work as a group to pick apart only the symbolism of a work.

Things You Don’t Know: We’ll look at little-known works by famous authors.

Journalism: Let’s look at how journalists write and why they write that way.

The Internet: From fan fiction to blog posts, let’s have a look at what amateur authors are doing.

Student Works: Bring in things that you’ve written.

B.Y.O.C.P.: Bring in a piece from your favorite (or any) contemporary poet.

Medieval Poetry: Dr. Hanks is bringing a treat with him when he comes: poems I’m sure we haven’t heard of. (they’re brilliant poems)

I don’t like your tone…: Let’s pick apart the actual language of a piece.

“Read any good books lately?”: We’ll take a look at excerpts from books published in the last ten years.

Literature in Context: Let’s focus on the relationship between Literature, Film, and Music.

It’s Finn again, quake!: We’re going to try and decipher part of the most abstract books that has ever existed. Fun fun.

Christmas Party: Details will be hammered out later in the semester.
