A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE MEMBERS OF THE 2003 GAFFNEY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH PHIL STRICKLAND FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WIN IN THE CLASS AAAA STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION.

Whereas, being a member of a sports team allows young people to have the opportunity to learn the skills of cooperation and teamwork while developing great athletic talents; and

Whereas, to become a champion in football, all members of the team and the coaching staff must have outstanding leadership and physical abilities; and

Whereas, the Gaffney High School “Indians” of Cherokee County capped their thrilling 2003 football season by taking the Class AAAA State title in a 2821 victory over Sumter High School in a resounding victory at WilliamsBrice Stadium in Columbia on December 6, 2003; and

Whereas, the victory was a real team effort and marked the fourteenth time that the Gaffney “Indians” have won the State championship title, setting a state record for the most championship wins by one team; and

Whereas, finishing the season with an overall record of 141, the Gaffney Football Team defeated two defending state champions this year in a close 2019 victory over Rock Hill High School and a 2115 win over Union High School; and

Whereas, Head Coach Phil Strickland charged his team with enthusiasm during the upperstate championship game against Summerville High School and the Gaffney “Indians” went on to defeat Summerville 1916; and

Whereas, with this state championship win, Head Coach Phil Strickland captures his fourth state championship win including two as the coach of BatesburgLeesville High School and one at South Aiken High School, and his overall football coaching record improves to 18446; and

Whereas, this outstanding finish for the 2003 Gaffney Football Team that accumulated fourteen wins and a state championship title has brought pride to not only Gaffney High School, its administration, staff, alumni students, and loyal fans, but also to the members of the Gaffney community and Cherokee County. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend their congratulations to the members of the 2003 Gaffney High School Football Team and Head Coach Phil Strickland for their outstanding state championship win in the Class AAAA State Football Championship Competition.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the 2003 Gaffney High School Football Team and Head Coach Phil Strickland.
