These guidelines have been developed to ensure that you are handing in your BEST work to be graded. Following these guidelines shows that you take pride in the work that you hand in and have given it the proper effort and attention that it deserves. ANY WORK HANDED IN THAT DOES NOT MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA WILL BE RETURNED,UNGRADED, TO BE REDONE. There will be a one-day grace periodto make the changes to your paper with no late penalty. Appropriate late penalties will be applied to any corrected work received after the one-day grace period.

  • The paper used must be free of marks, spill stains, and jagged edges. If it is a piece of notebook paper, the holes must be on the left-hand side. Your teacher has paper available for you to use as needed.
  • The minimum heading should be your first and last name written in the upper left-hand corner of the paper along with the class period and date.

  • Proper formatting/directions for assignment must be followed. If answers should be numbered, they need to be numbered. If paragraph form is asked for, the expectation is that paragraph form will be used. This will vary per assignment, so read the directions carefully and ask your teacher for clarification if you do notunderstand the expectations.
  • If work is handwritten, all book titles must be underlined; story, poem and song names must be in quotations. If work is typed, all titles must be italicized.
  • All sentences must begin with a capital letter and end with the proper punctuation.
  • There should be no capital letters in the middle of a sentence unless it is for a proper noun, and absolutely no capitals in the middle of words .
  • No abbreviations are appropriate in graded work unless otherwise permitted by your teacher.
  • Your best attempt must be made to spell words correctly that are directly copied from a source, the board, or from somewhere on the assignment.
  • All work must be proofread for errors. There should be no missing words, sentences that do not make sense, or illegible writing.
  • Unless otherwise directed by your teacher, you should do all graded assignments in blue/black ink or pencil. No markers, colored pencils, or colored ink is to be used.

Handing in your BEST work is your goal, so double check your graded work using this checklist before handing it in to your teacher. Your hard work and effort will pay off with higher scores and greater learning!

For all graded assignments:

My paper is neat.

My heading is complete.

My work follows directions for assignment.

If applicable: all book titles, story names, poems, and song titles are properly formatted.

I have proofread my work.

I have used appropriate ink or pencil, as instructed by my teacher.

Additional guidelines for written assignments:

All my sentences begin with capital letters and end with proper punctuation.

The only words capitalized in the middle of sentences are proper nouns.

I have only abbreviated words that are appropriate to abbreviate.

Words that are in directions or assignment should be spelled correctly.
