Class Description:

English:
This 6th grade English class is designed to help you explore both non-fictionand fictional texts at grade and individual reading level. As a 6th grade student, you will learn reading strategies to analyze multiple texts. In addition, you will be required to use technology in the classroom in order to improve your reading and comprehension level through the use of Achieve 3000-- a computer based reading program. As Writers and Editors you will be expected to write in a variety of genres, and to collaborate with peers to improve writing skills. As publishingauthors, at the end of each unit there will be a Publishing Ceremony where you will be able to share your finished work with others.
Social Studies:
As an Ancient Civilization Historian you will go back to the start of some of the greatest civilizations that have shaped the world of today. Through this class you will explore the Geography, Government, Education, Daily Life and greatest accomplishments of Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, India, Greece and the Great Roman Empire. In this class you will use TCI’s Bringing History Alive! text and student interactive notebook online to complete classwork and homework. You will also be expected to work collaboratively with others on projects and classroom activities.
Math:
As 6th graders youwill use active speaking, writing, listening, and critical thinking skills in order for you to be active problem solvers and strategic thinkers. You will be expected to strengthen and expand your mathematical skills in the following ways:
Make sense of problems and persevere and solving them, reason abstractly and quantitatively, construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, model with mathematics, use appropriate tools strategically, attend to precision, look for and make use of structure, and look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Science:
In 6th grade integrated science, you will be expected to actively use a high level of inquiry and have an understanding of the natural and physical world. You will be expected to actively use engineering practices to create solutions to problems, be observant through active observations, be active in engagement and questioning, and be able to actively apply the scientific method.
Middle School Success:
All 6th grade Scholars will be expected to utilize their binder, agendas, and apply organizational skills learned in Middle School Success across all classes including Physical Education. All 6th grade teachers will be using the same Middle School Success strategies, and you as students will be expected to come to every class ready and prepared. You will utilize SLANT in your classes to demonstrate class engagement and academic dialogue among your peers. Weekly binder checks will be extremely important to your academic success.
Advisory:
Advisory ia safe environment where you will build a community growth mindset, collaboration, teamwork, communication, conflict resolution, solution oriented, and share ideas and concerns, and become advocates and aware of your community. Advisory is also a place to reflect and critically thinking about the world, and issues surrounding us. In addition, it’s a space to reflect about your academic success, and grades.
Agenda:
Must be used with fidelity in every class to record homework, important due dates, and used as checklist to complete homework.

Bathroom Pass Policy:

It is your responsibility to use the bathroom before class or during passing periods. Scholars always maximize their instructional time!

Electronics Policy:

Electronics are not allowed to be used during school hours or on campus. If electronics are visible, students will be asked to turn them into the office and parents will be notified.

Class Requirements

You are required to have a Binder (all materials needed in your binder), and Agenda.
