Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center

Local Toastmasters Club to meet with MLK Freedom Riders

What: On July 2, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law in the presence of several civil rights leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Civil Rights Act is a landmark piece of legislation in the United States that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of President Johnson signing this act into law. On September 25, 2014, Dr. Jerry Chambers of the MLK Community Center Board will take 10 students from Dallas to Washington, D.C. on a historical tour to visit the White House. The tour will also include attending the STEM Conference, as well as visiting the Senate, Congress, Lincoln Mall, and the offices of Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and Congressman John Lewis.

These students are part of the 2014 MLK Freedom Ride Tour, which was created to provide life-changing opportunities by allowing them to travel and experience real people, places, and events that are important in American History.

On Saturday, August 30, 2014, a local Toastmasters club will work in conjunction with the Freedom Ride students on developing and improving their communication skills before the tour of Washington, D.C. This meeting will be held at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center from 10:00am to 12:00pm.

This is a great opportunity to come out and learn more about the MLK Freedom riders, the historical value of the 50th Anniversary of President Johnson signing the Civil Rights Act, and Toastmasters.

When: Saturday, August 30, 2014 from 10:00AM to 12:00PM

Where: The Martin Luther King Community Center, located at 2922 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.

Who: This event is free and open to the public.
