·  Tourism revenue accounts for 4.4% of the UK’s total GDP

·  Tourism is the UK’s third largest export earner.

·  Tourism is the sixth largest industry, ahead of agriculture, financial services and transport and almost as large as education.

·  Over 40% of tourism expenditure is on products and services purchased from businesses not traditionally regarded as part of the tourism industry

·  Almost 80% of tourism jobs are located outside London

·  One FTE job in tourism is created for every additional £40,000 of tourism expenditure.

·  Taxation from tourists is equivalent to 45% of UK Government expenditure on Education.

·  Every 1% increase in tourism revenue generates £118m in revenue for Government

·  Increasing tourism to £100bn by 2010 will increase Government revenue by almost £4bn per annum

·  For every £1 the Government invests in tourism, it gains £5 through taxation for reinvestment

4.  Spreading the Benefits

·  43% of both domestic tourism trips (58m) and expenditure (£8.9bn) occurs in the countryside and small towns.

·  Tourism employs the second largest proportion of people qualified to or below NVQ level 2.

·  Tourism is the greatest employer of disabled people in Britain

·  More school leavers begin their careers in tourism than any other industry

The Tourism Alliance

The Tourism Alliance is the “Voice of the UK Tourism Industry”.

It was established in 2001 with the support of the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, and comprises over 40 Tourism Industry Associations that together represent 200,000 business of all sizes throughout the UK.

Purpose

The purpose of the Tourism Alliance is to identify and develop policies and strategies that raise standards and promote quality within the industry and to work with and lobby government on all key issues relevant to the growth and development of tourism and its contribution to the economy. It also acts as a conduit for information from Government to the Tourism Industry.

Objectives

The Tourism Alliance has four main objectives. These are to;

1.  Remove Barriers to Business

2.  Ensure the Quality of UK Products and Services

3.  Improve the Skills of Tourism Employees

4.  Increase Investment in Tourism

Areas of Activity

The Tourism Alliance has a series of Working Groups to develop policy in four key areas. These are;

1.  Education, Skills and Training;

2.  Taxation and Fiscal Issues

3.  Tourism Funding

4.  Transport and Infrastructure

In addition to these policy groups, the Alliance works with individuals and industry associations that have specialist knowledge of other issues to ensure that expertise from throughout the industry is brought to bear on a wide range of issues.
