ANNUAL REPORT: 2004-05

We have pleasure to present the Seventh Annual Report of New Alipur ANUBHAB along with the audited accounts for the year ended 31st March 2005.

In the year 2004-05, all the activities were consolidated to reach the hapless children, which has created goodwill for the organization in the locality. We organized regular meeting with the parents of both special and destitute children. We are glad to send two of our students in mainstream for higher education.

The Caregivers Training programme conducted by us has made very good impact and the trainees’ involvement during the six months’ course is very encouraging. The trained caregivers are now rendering their service in the community with dedication.

Various activities including the Parent Counselling programmes, Community Awareness Programmes, Training Programmes etc. evoked much enthusiasm amongst the participants. Participation of our students in cultural programmes and sports organized by us and other organizations created interest not only to the students but also to the parents, teachers, well-wishers and local people. Health and eye check-up camps of our students and other children of locality had good impact in the locality.

The exhibition of products manufactured by the students viz., jute items, handicrafts, paper bags, greetings cards etc. were highly applauded by the visitors. The need to strengthen our activities for production of such commodities was very much felt.

Chronology of important activities:

On 24th April 2004, an Awareness Programme on identification and early intervention was held at Taratala. Approximately 1000 people participated in the progrmme. In this connection a sit and draw competition and blood group test was organized.

A seminar was held on 28th April at 45, Elliot Road where the problem of involving destitute children in mainstream education was discussed at length. Sri Amalesh Dasgupta and Smt. Anindita Banerjee took active part in organizing the seminar. Representatives of various organizations working in the concerned field participated in the discussion.

On 1st May 2004, the students participated in a three days long one act drama festival at Ram Mohan Library Hall organized by Kaliya. The students received prizes and certificates for their performance.

The first Caregivers Training Programme concluded in May 2004. The trainees got certificates from National Trust for successful completion of their training. During the training period they were taken to institutions like Monobiksh Kendra, Shelter, Pradip Centre for Autism etc. for exposure.

On 15th May, a meeting was organized by Bikash Bharati at Academy of Fine Arts to

discuss about distribution of hearing aids and educational materials to special students. 10 students of our school received hearing aids.

On 12th June, a meeting was organized at the National Institute for the Orthopaedically Handicapped where representatives from the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment addressed on several issues relating to the rehabilitation and education of special children. On behalf of our organization Sri Amalesh Dasgupta, Smt. Sumitra Chatterjee and Smt. Anindita Bannerjee attended the meeting. The representatives of the Ministry denied the question of allowing further grants-in-aid to Kolkata based organizations.

On 13th. July, the teachers of the Sikshalaya Prakalpa were invited by the Office of the City Level Programme of Action to attend a meeting to discuss the problems of destitute children.

The Annual Cultural Programme was held at Rabindra Sadan on 22nd August 2004. The students performed mime and a dance drama named ‘Gandhabichar’ written by the noted poet Sukumar Ray. The audience highly applauded the performance of the mentally retarded and hearing impaired students despite their limitations.

An eye check-up camp was organized in the school premises on 14th. September where beside the students of the school, local children, parents and their siblings of underprivileged community took part.

On 15th. September, a state competition was organized by Rajya Pratibandhi Sammilani at Salt Lake Stadium where our students participated. Approximately 200 organisations from the districts took part. Our students received prizes in various events.

A dance drama festival was held at Netaji Indoor Stadium on 18th. September organized by C.L.P.O.A. The Governor of West Bengal graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Our students performed a dance drama, which was highly appreciated by the audience.

On 20th. September, Smt. A. Bannerjee attended a meeting at the Academy of Fine Arts convened by C.L.P.O.A. where the role of the N.G.Os was discussed.

On 23rd. and 24th. September, a workshop on various disabilities was organized at Sisir Mancha. The representatives of government organisations and concerned non-profit organizations took part in the deliberation.

A workshop on Early Intervention was organized at the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy on 27th. September where the teachers and parents participated.

A seminar on Awareness on Fire Safety for children of non-formal education center in and around Kolkata was held at the Academy of Fine Arts on 28th. September. The teachers of schools from different parts of Kolkata took part.

On 30th. September, the Annual General Meeting of the National Trust was held at New Delhi. On behalf of our organization, Smt. A. Bannerjee, Smt. S. Chatterjee and Sri A. Dasgupta attended the meeting.

A workshop on hearing impairment was held at the National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped on 5th. And 6th. October. Our teacher Smt. Soma Ghose and Smt. Kalyani Halder attended and took part in the deliberation.

An exhibition was organized by LAMP on 23rd. November at Nehru Children’s Museum where the products manufactured by our students were displayed for sale.

On 30th. November, four units of Sishujagat were opened where our students and other children of their family took part. A cultural programme was organized on that occasion.

On 7th. January, a seminar was held at the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy where representatives from the Rehabilitation Council of India and the Ministry of Social Justice deliberated on different aspects of rehabilitation of the disabled children.

On 9th. January 2005, a sit and draw competition was organized where students from different schools were invited to participate. The performance of our students was praiseworthy.

On 30th January a Parent Counselling programme was organized where parents from different schools were invited. The programme created much enthusiasm amongst the parents. Psychologists, Speech therapist, Psychiatrist and experts from different fields of disabilities took part in the discussion and replied to the questions raised by the participants.

On 14th. February, Smt A. Banerjee and Sri A.Dasgupta held a seminar at Hotel Hindustan International organized by Cini-Asha, CLPOA and Bikramsila to discuss about the Reach India project. On the same day in the evening the Social Welfare Samman was felicitated at the Academy of Fine Arts. PS Chakraborty Trust, UK, sponsored the award.

Other information:

On 27th. September, Mr. and Mrs. Dilip Dasgupta, well-wishers of our organization donated 5 hearing aids to hearing-impaired students and distributed snacks to the students to commemorate the sad demise of their beloved son.

On 14th. November, Children’s day was celebrated in the school. In the afternoon, the students were taken to Alipur Zoo.

On 15th. November, another organization named MAYA distributed cake, biscuit etc. on the eve of X-mas day.

On 4h. February, the annual picnic was held at Bibirhat. Sri Dipak Mukherjee, a well-wisher sponsored the occasion. Smt. Sumitra Chatterjee took initiative in organizing the event.

On 5th. February, at the initiative of our organization, Rotary Club of Joka organized a sports-meet where few other schools participated. The parents and teachers also took part in the competition.

On 18th. February, the students, teachers and parents were taken to Mother Dairy factory at Dankuni for a pleasure trip. Smt. Anindita Bannerjee took initiative in organizing the programme.

On 15th. March, a meeting was held to organize a teachers’ training programme with the teachers of similar type of organizations.

Special mention is made about teachers of our organization but for whose contribution and dedication, the school could not develop in its present state. We are also indebted to our friends and well-wishers for their continuous patronage and support.
